I sort of look upon the U.K. as big brother to the U.S. when it comes to social progress and human rights. I guess it's because you've made so many strides in the area of sexual equality. That's why I was a bit surprised, and saddened, to come across this youtube vid. I guess it just goes to show that there are areas in the western world that still have a long ways to go before accepting human differences.

This is a rather depressing video, and it would be futile to deny that homophobia does exist in the UK.

At the same time, there have been a long series of complaints, videos, some media coverage, and innumerable postings on a number of internet forums and social networking sites against the Devon & Cornwall Police and other local bodies ... which have been investigated in depth and found to be largely unfounded - for example http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-7246.html

The vast majority of such complaints originate from a single person (Malcolm L. - presumeably the "Malcs" of the video). His experience is not born out by the vast majority of the posts I've seen from other Cornish residents replying to him on message boards, and I suspect that it would be unwise to take this video entirely at face value ...

I think one thing shines out here: That we have not seen the other side. That is not to say that the video is incorrect, just that we have not seen the other side.

However, if anyone wishes, the UK's Freedom of Information Act can be used in order to see the official side as well as Malc's side.

It interests me that Peter is an attractive lad. Would the video have so much effect had he been butt ugly?

Homophobia does exist in the UK, of course it does, but for it to be as extensive as this video suggests is unlikely, though possible.

Dear Paul,

I've emailed my MP (who is gay, by the way) and sent you a BCC. Stephen is a good guy and if he takes the bait I trust him to take a balanced view. [I'm treasurer of a LibDem ward in his constituency.]

Love,
Anthony
