Your Dog Can Stay You Can't
Gay Couple Told
(London) Two London men were told to leave a hotel on the weekend after the manager learned they were gay. But, their dog, the manager told them, was welcome to stay.
Nigel Griffiths and Ian Humphreys say they had checked into the Swan Hotel, at Thornthwaite, in England's Lake Country, and were sitting down to dinner in the restaurant when Colin Harrison who runs the Swan approached them.
"This man came across the room and said he was not happy about two men sharing a room. The dining room was full and we had never seen this man before," Griffiths said.
"We could not believe what we were hearing. The staff looked embarrassed.
" He said something about it being illegal and what we were doing was immoral."
The couple said they collected their pet and luggage and spent several hours finding a new hotel.
"We have been all over the world and never seen such a thing. It is not acceptable in this day and age," Griffiths said.
"We felt extremely harassed and humiliated.
The men, who both work in the ad industry in London, have filed a complaint with police. They are to meet with their lawyer later today.
Harrison, 51, admitted discriminating, but said the hotel is his home.
Now having just taken a long vacation with JJ, I realize this could have happened to us. I don't even want to think about it. While neither of us are physically affectionate to one another in public nor are either of us fem or obviously gay acting/looking, we shared a bed everywhere we stayed (and none of these places were "gay" hotels or whatever) and we had breakfast & dinner together, went everywhere together. If I had seen this before we went, it would have made me more self-conscious. As it was, we were relaxed and "ourselves" the whole trip.
How awful for this couple to be embarrassed and harrassed like that. Had it happened to me - I sincerely think I would be facing assault charges. I wouldnt take it lightly - someone insulting JJ.

He states that he has many gay guests, and onoy objected because the men wished to share a double bed. he has, it seems, no objection to their having single beds in a twin bedded room.
He says that HE would have committed an illegal act because his staff have pass keys, and would thus have potentially had his staff present during a sexual act by the men (having more that a gay couple in private is illegal in the UK). He feels justified in that it is his home.
His website is http://www.swan-hotel-keswick.co.uk/ He has a free number for any UK person to call him to establish the truth for himself.
He says that for every complaint he has received he has received 10 calls in praise.

By the way, this article is queued to go to over 2000 gay men worldwide, and has reached over 800 via the list here. The 2000 depend on the good will of the moderator of that group, but he is a gay rights activist and usually forwards mail.

I, for one am very interested in the accomodations and have sent the innkeeper the following:
Dear Innkeeper,
It is my understanding that your fine establishment now prefers to cater to canines. I believe this is a wonderful idea. I have often wanted to treat my dogs to a vacation they'll never forget. An establishment as luxurious as your should be just the place. I believe the colour televisions and en suite facilities will hold a particular appeal for them. Also of interest would be a window facing the moon as they do so love to bay at its presence. They would, of course, require meal service as well.
Though they are a bi-racial couple (Great Dane and German Shepherd), I believe they meet your sexuality requirement as they are of opposite sex and thus should be permitted to share one room. However, I must inquire about acceptable masturbatory practices. I would hope that auto-fellatio is not also illegal in your country as my Great Dane tends to have a propensity to lick his own genitalia.
Please reply to this email with a price list and availability.
Thank you

This is yet another example of an issue when our voices may be heard. If each of us who read this, take a moment to call or e-mail this hotel with our disgust, and urge others not to spend any money there, it WILL make a difference. Just one voice, makes a difference. Together, WE DO HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE.
Sure, maybe that one person will still be there. Maybe the hotel will refuse to change policy. But to say or do nothing, we then have no right to complain.
Join me and try to make one little corner of the world a better place.

I've mailed him too. Being a Brit, I adopted a thoroughly Brit style of reproof, rather like "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" in reverse. I've actually been to his place - to drink, not stay - and could assure him truthfully that I wouldn't patronise his establishment again and would actively advise friends going to the Lakes to steer clear of it.

Dear Mr. Harrison,
I have heard of the Swan Hotel, looked at your web site, and have a friend who has visited previously. However, my wife and I will not be visiting your establishment.
Your web site claims, "We feel that the hotel has a warm and friendly atmosphere and that guests feel at home."
However, I understand that two guests, Nigel Griffiths and Ian Humphreys, were recently embarrassed by you and asked to leave just as dinner was starting. I believe they had done nothing to offend the other guests or your staff.
I understand that you asked them to leave for moral reasons and that because your hotel is your home, you felt justified in doing so. I ask you to rethink your position. By opening your "home" to guests and taking their money, you are obligated to treat them with respect and courtesy.
I am a Christian - I try to do follow Jesus' examples in my life, but, like everyone else, I am imperfect. Jesus befriended "sinners." He did not cast them away. But then, of course, we are ALL sinners. It is God's place to judge us. It is our place to love and respect each other.
By telling these gentlemen to leave but saying their dog was welcome to stay, you imply they are more lowly than dogs. That is just not right.
I also believe you were not completely honest when you told a friend that part of your reasoning was legal responsibility, that "staff with passkeys might inadvertently walk in on them engaged in sex." I sincerely hope that your staff is well-trained enough to never walk in on guests during intimate moments and that your rooms are equipped with privacy locks to prevent this. The issue of guests' privacy has nothing whatsoever to do with sexual orientation.
For the sake of your business and the comfort of guests, if nothing else, I do hope you will take my words to heart and reconsider your actions.
Sincerely,
Trevor Jamison

Nicely written, Trevor. A bit more civil than the one I wrote.
Think good thoughts,
