Way to go! The scenario is frightening to the USA - the men are too manly to be gay! THAT terrifies folk. We might be ANYWHERE

Well, it was a big assumption that two men kissing on the lips might be gay.

"Gay men"

I was commenting on the "manly" part of your post.....

It doesnt take a great deal of imagination to relate to the gay theme... after all it was presented here.

If anyone feels that the Heinz decision to pull this advert was misguided, pusillanimous, gutless and wrong, do feel free to contact them on http://www.heinzsight.co.uk/ContactUs.aspx I have!

(Their form isn't reliable, especially under Firefox - you may have to use another browser, re-type the message, or try again later!) And I've just been told that messages can also be e-mailed to consumer.contact@uk.hjheinz.com or heinzfoodservice@impactdm.co.uk if you can't get the form to work.

(edit - added e-mail contact)

glad to hear it worked OK for you - apparently, part of the problem was that their system was overloaded and not able to respond!

There's now also a petition - which already has more than twice as many signatures as there were original complaints - at http://www.petitiononline.com/heinz

and a facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=18375931157

Stonewall has called for a boycott of all Heinz Products: see http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-8088.html

OK, some may think this is all an over-reaction. But, the way I see it,

either this is a cynical marketing ploy, in which a "dangerous gay" commercial was shown, anticipating a reaction from bigots and homophobes which would incite debate to get their product noticed, and they always intended to pull the advert to increase the furore

or a major international company has cravenly caved in to a very small number of bigots.

Neither of these is really acceptable, and if it takes a legion of furious fags, friends, families and fellow-travellers to show both Heinz and other multinationals that the time is long past when we'll meekly stand for this, well, that's what it takes and count me in!

Well, they're...not.

The implication is that the sandwiches that MOM makes are as good as a New York deli sandwich maker's. Yes, it was two men kissing, but they're not "together" as two men.

Of course not. It was a cartoon situation populated by human beings instead of drawings. But Heinz has made it into a "gay kiss" by withdrawing the advert, and created its own altar on which to sacrifice itself.

The advert was poor, too. I missed the message until it was spelled out to me in short words. The agency should be ashamed, and the idiots who said "Yes, this is great, air it!" made a woeful misjudgment, just because of the trashiness.

But the infinitely worse error was to withdraw it after 200 moral guardians complained. That positioned it as a gay issue, alienated the pink pound, and alienated a load of folks whose sexuality is irrelevant to the issue.

The responses in public from Heinz show arrogance beyond belief and a total lack of listening to their customers.

The demand that the advert be reinstated is also farcical. It's a crap advert. Why reinstate it?

And the answer is "because the withdrawal has offended so many people that only the reinstatement, even for a short time, will satisfy the crowd."

She was Miss Oklahoma, and runner up in the Miss America contest, was a singer that had 3 hit songs. Her stint in Florida reversed an anti-discrimination ordinace, she should have her picture in the dictionary next to the word homophobia. All her victories have turned into defeat in insuing years. Last heard she has recanted her anti-gay views and wants by gones be by gones. She is probably old, wrinkled and bitter.

I discovered that one UK politician did "something" sbout it:

Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg has today written to the Director of UK Corporate Affairs at Heinz, urging him to reconsider the company’s decision to withdraw an advert that featured two men kissing.

The full text of the letter is below:

I am writing to express my disappointment at Heinz’s decision to withdraw the Deli Mayonnaise advert this week. The depiction of a same-sex kiss in this advert was innocent both in tone and content, and I am shocked that you decided to withdraw it. While I understand that some people in Britain today are uncomfortable with same-sex relationships, such prejudice should not be condoned by an organisation of your size and stature. The sight of two men kissing affectionately should not be considered offensive or controversial. This is particularly the case in an advertisement which was so rich in irony and double-meaning. The decision to withdraw it has not only offended many gay, lesbian, transgender - and straight - people, it also represents a backward step in attempts to combat homophobia in Britain today, not to mention a collective loss of humour. I am asking you to reverse this decision and reinstate the advert. Yours sincerely, Nick Clegg MP

Heinz are not listening to folk. The petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?heinz has well over eleven thousand signatures, but they have still missed the entire point.

Put simply:
  • The ad is by no means about homosexuality - it is a sort of cartoon kiss that just happens to be between a male dad and a male pseudo-mum
  • The add was pulled by Heinz after 202 UK complaints to the UK's Advertising Standards Authority
  • Heinz chose to apologise "to the people who were offended", thus demonstrating that they kowtow to 202 bigoted complaints
  • The American Family Association (to whom the advert is irrelevant because it never showed in the USA) are probably at the root of Heinz's worries because they and Heinz are US based
  • Heinz has started to "apologise" again to those who complain, BUT the apology is apologise FOR the advert, not for PULLING it.

If you are on Facebook you can see a load of verbiage about it here: http://tinyurl.com/65gxyx Do join the facebook group.

There is a pretty reasonable description of it by someone I know rarher well at the following urls (cronological order):I expect this will run for a bit.

If you have your own blog, please add this material to it. the more different results that search engines show for Heinz Deli Mayo that feature this discussion the more Heinz will be overwhelmed.

Agencies make adverts....

Heinz is under no obligation to use an advert just because it has been made....

Just because it has a gay couple kissing once in it does not make it a gay rallying point....

They arent in the gay agenda business... they are in the pickle business... irregardless of whatever opinion gay advocates have... it's their business.

You are missing much of the point. Heinz, as a large corporation promoting the fact that it listens to its customers, has chosen to apologise to 202 of them for choosing to run the advert in the first place.

In reality trying to persuade them to reinstate the advert IS stupid. The attempt should be to get them to do something positive to help combat homophobia.

It is the apology that is offensive, not the advert. And the advert has nothing to do with homosexuality.

If the advert had been a black couple kissing and Heinz received complaints, would it have withdrawn the advert and apologised to all white folks who were offended?

You said there were over eleven thousand signitures in favor of reinstating the advert.

How many thousand are in favor of it not being reinstated?

If there are eleven thousand and one in favor of not renewing its showing then Heinz IS listening to its customer base.

Why is it that when others do what little they do for gay rights you appear to despise that? The contrary view is not always the one you must take. Sometimes there are degrees of being right. Even the different drummer you so often choose to march to is, just sometimes, in step with the rest of the world.
