When I was 8 I learnt some judo. I was told "Judo equalises things. You can use the size of a larger opponent to beat them." And we all managed to throw the huge instructor with ease.

So, if that is true, how come the judo fights in the Olympics are in weight classes?

Why do they lie to little kids like that? It's total bollocks!

Hi Timmy,

However, you were not lied to...
Many martial arts often use the energy of an opponent to defeat them best example being aiki-do. BUT, martial arts in defence really work best when your opponent does not know about your skill, aka moment of surprise. When it comes to sports events, everybody knows that the runners-up are masters in what they do. That means, you have to divide these masters according to their weight because the surprise, which is the strongest weapon out there in the streets, does not apply. Division by weight is logic due to the fact, that you work with energy of your opponent and combining the basics about kinetic and potential energy (E kinetic = 0.5 x m x v x v; and E potential = m x g x h) will give you that in both formulae there is mass included. That means, that if you are ready for your opponent and know what to expect, larger weight gives you unfair advantage.

And, believe me, in sports like boxing or karate which do not completely rely on your opponents' energy, the difference of weight is important, too.

The high school in the town where I was sent off to school had regular saturday nite dances......

There was a boy from a neighboring town that "took judo" and invariably started trouble at the dances.

This went well for him up until someone got pissed, picked up a maple folding chair, neatly folded it, and cracked the judo boi neatly across the forehead.

Strangely enough, this was not a one on occurance.... It would happen about once a month... and for many many months.

Some people never learn.

Swaggering pricks who usually start trouble have different favourite martial arts in Slovakia: thai box (or muay thai) and kick box (which is very similar).
Imagine 190 cm, 110 kg who looks like a pitbull waiting to be released and you got it.
