I had the variant called "Antivirus XP 2008", and founds this was a good guide to easily remove it. I think the same will apply to other variants too:

NO........... Who would do something like that?

I never ever download, open, accept anything that doesnt come from a party known to me.

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

I assume that means you don't use any Microsoft products, then?

Actually, it is possible to get this or similar malware without accepting anything. In my case, I was using firefox (supposedly the safer choice), and I am quite sure I didn't click on any popup to accept it. Also, the browser is set to block unwanted popups, but that doesn't work either on the more dodgy sites.

Browsers have bugs and there are people who exploit them. For profit. Also, web server software has bugs and the same people will use those to corrupt websites for the purpose of spreading malware. Because malware may be quite profitable, these people will not report the bugs to the software manufacturers, but instead sell the details to or other people who are likewise criminally inclined. People in countries like Bulgaria do this professionally, and make a good living off it.

It's actually quite easy if you switch to a Mac or Linux.

If you use Microsoft products for 'real work', you end up trusting them, as their products are so complicated that no-one can ever be sure what's going on underneath. That's not to say that most of us wouldn't prefer not to.

David, Dearest,

The thread is about downloads.

Nothing but downloads... no matter how you try to make it about everything microsoft... it is still just about downloads.

This is so true. However, experience, alas, teaches us that threads seem to be about whatever the posters make them. They go where they will - or rather where we will them to go. I wouldn't worry about it.
