Two moons on 27th August

27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am (26 Aug 08 23.30hrs UTC/GMT). It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

I dream of boys with big bulges in their trousers,
Never of girls with big bulges in their blouses.

…and look forward to meeting you in Cóito.

I'm not so sure the moon will look at large as a full moon. The variance of diameter coupled with distance, as compared to relative distance and diameter of the moon makes this quite improbable.

I would like to review the data or otherwise information that gave you this information please.

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Apart from adding the UTC time and date the information was forwarded as I received it. I think your response is logical.

I looked closely at that photo and the streak across the bottom matches extreemily close to an area of the Saturn rings and the spheres shown do line up with the comparitive present positions of either the pairs.. Janus and Promethius or Promethius and Atlas.

The picture looks so regular, bland and featureless it has to be computer-generated. It would be virtually impossible to get a real picture like that from anywhere in the solar system.

Given that Mars and the Moon are in the same order of magnitude in terms of size, and there's no way that Mars will come anywhere near as close to the Earth as the Moon, you're absolutely right, Marc, that they cannot be anywhere near the same size as perceived from the Earth (without the end of the world being extremely nigh, at least!).

And ... hmm, Nigel, you might want to check first before posting something you received by email. It dates back to at least 2005:

Hmm, David. I did check, but because I am not a geek my checking resources are limited.

You did check?

I'm sorry, but I don't think you need to be a geek (say) to put 'august 27 mars' into Google. If you do so, you'll see several links on the first page that point out that it's not true this year, and that many of the claims were never true for any year.

If you're not up to that (and I know how hard it is to find Google these days ... such an unmemorable domain name!), if it's fake, 99 times out of 100 it'll be on the Urban Legends Reference Pages at snopes.com -- which indeed it is -- so you could add that to your bookmarks. The site has been mentioned lots of times on this board in the past.
