I've been renting and watching gay coming-of-age movies in recent weeks. My first, actually, was Trick, which I fell in love with over a year ago. The recent viewings have included:
-- Beautiful Thing (liked a lot for the grittiness and fine ensemble),
-- Edge of Seventeen (fell in love with for the lead and the story and the ensemble...and the lead) [although not for its Sandusky location; sorry, Marc],
-- Friends Forever [Danish] (did not grab me)
-- Get Real (enjoyed)

Tonight I saw Latter Days and once again fell in love [yeah, I've gotta get out more...]. Witty, deeply angsty, excellent ensemble, tear-provoking ending, TWO hunky leads!

What are your favorites in this genre?

See Beautiful Thing as a stage play. It beats the movie (director and acting are critical) hollow. I'm not sure now if it was a "play for TV" or a "play for the stage" originally, but live actors make even the surreal ending excellent.

'Get Real' is my favourite. I've got it on VHS and DVD. I don't quite know why. Ben Siverstone at that age just makes me melt.

Dear Brit,

I haven't ever seen one. I was tempted to buy 'Summer storm' which was about German Oarsmen (and I was an oarsman myself, once). I saw a few extracts but wasn't moved to buy it (in spite of Donny's recommendation!).

I'd very much welcome a few words more on what each of those you've seen are like.

Love,
Anthony
