I must be pretty naive. Until they came out I never realised the following were gay!- Frankie Howerd
- Kenny Everett
- Freddy Mercury
- Elton John
Do you guys have a few to add to the list, the ones that you never realised were gay?

The only one that I can think of is Rob Halford - lead singer with the heavy metal band 'Judas Priest'.

I should have added Wilfred Brambell and Dirk Bogarde (though he never came out, did he?), too

I'm having difficulty with this question. If I didn't realise they were gay, how can I add their names to the list?

Simon Amstell, Andrew Hayden-Smith, John Barrowman, Matti Lucas, Dale Winton, Boy George, Ian McKellen, David Paisley, Will Young, Michael Cashman, Stephen Fry, George Michael, Stephen Gately.
All these are British celebrities (well, one is Irish).

Why does it matter if they are gay or not?
How does it matter?
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Beats me. I just thought it might be interesting. It interested me, so I posted it. Seems it interested a few others. They posted.

Obviously, it doesn't "matter" in the least - much of what we talk about on here doesn't.
But I've found it interesting so far ... perhaps not least because my own perception of myself is that I tend to have "gaydar" for people aged under about 25 (I may know about them long before they admit it to themselves, or come out: in the case of one lad I knew he way gay 20 years before he did!). Alas, any "gaydar" usually fails me with people closer to my own age.
So for me the interest is not in "who is gay", but which of the posters here recognised which of the well-known people mentioned, if that makes any kind of sense.

I think were missing something here. Gay boys, (most that ive known anyway) have low self esteme. They for the most part have grown up in hostil environments. boys or girls both gay and straight need role models to look up to. It really doesnt mater if someone is gay or str8t except to show a gay child that anything is possible even for them. that gay men can become heros, world chanpions and acomplished actors and actrisses.

Hummm!!, Even from across the pond I always knew Elton was gay, his earlier music basically said it, from my high school days. Freddie didn't surprise me yet I always thought so just from the band's name "Queen" LOL. Liberace, Boy George dead give always, ya'll don't need gaydar here.

Of course it matters. It would affect the kind of strippogram I would send them.

But doesn't it matter to you, Benji,
whether the guy was someone you could admire?
I think everyone knew Liberace was gay (or at least effeminate) but I couldn't stand him or his programs. Same goes for Larry Grayson.
I remember when Gilbert Harding was on 'This is Your Life' and being a bit nauseated by him and the way he tried to conceal his sexuality. Give me Tom Driberg every time!
Strangely I've had a few extremely camp friends who were not homosexual. I don't react the same way to them at all.
You know, they say the way to learn something properly is to teach it. Well I think the way to understand one's sexuality is to talk about it in a place of safety. Anyone agree to that?
Love,
Anthony

That is one of the reasons I set it up
