It dealt, among other things, all useful things, with male penile hygiene. Now, oddly, despite not having had to submit to a circumcision until I was 23 or so, I am unsure of the answer here.

Smegma was the ~shock, horror~ topic. Those with a foreskin may know that smegma is a whitish deposit fund under the foreskin, made up of old cells, general gunge and skin oils. You may not know that it is cited as being good in the prevention of penile cancer.

Those without a foreskin will only know it of they have an uncut partner.

I have a question for the foreskin owners, well a few questions:

1) Were you ever taught to clean under your foreskin, and if so, how were you taught to do it?

2) Do you have a significant amount of smegma?

3) Surely urine balloons a little in the foreskin and washes some of the smegma away, and masturbation removes the rest?

I'd answer myself, but a damaged foreskin caused an intractable phimosis for me and I had to wash under the foreskin using an irrigation technique from about 15 onwards. Prior to that, no smegma.

Over to you guys!

Dear Timmy,

Smegma is produced by a pair of glands at each side of the frenulum - I'm circumcised but could manipulate first one side and then the other of it so as to expose where the gland duct came through the skin and could squeeze it gently to clear it of smegma. I discovered that it had a very strong smell.

I used to produce enough to feel it necessary to squeeze the ducts to clear it every few days, but haven't done so for a long time and nothing comes out nowadays.

Grandson is uncircumcised and so is his father but he (aged 12) was only taught to clean under his foreskin by sex education lessons at school! I must admit I had wondered and was interested to find that his parents hadn't taught him that bit of hygiene and that they welcomed the school doing it and that Tom had told them.

Although I have read that smegma is soapy I don't think it dissolves in urine - at least not easily - and even if the foreskin is tight and balloons with fierce peeing I doubt whether the flow would normally pass across the ends of the ducts so as to clear the smegma away. And I think masturbation would only do so if, in the process the foreskin were fully retracted so that your hand could rub under the corona of the glans which is where the smegma collects if not cleaned out.

Probably more than you wanted to know ... ...

Love,
Anthony

Dear Timmy,

that was interesting though I don't believe the lubricant suggestion. Smegma is much too thick to act as a lubricant. It's called sebaceous, it's not at all liquid and when squeezed out of the duct it comes out as a little yellowish white worm.

Love,
Anthony

1. No, I was never taught how to clean. Actually, when I was very young I was told never to touch or fiddle with my penis, and for a while I never questioned that. It took me an awfully long time to discover that the foreskin actually retracts (it was tight to begin with, and I never knew it wasn't supposed to be that way). When I finally managed to get it back I was rather alarmed at the build-up underneath, and regularly cleaned it from then on.

2. Not any more. I haven't been aware of any for years, but that's because I clean under the foreskin daily.

3. I would have thought that smegma is too thick and clingy for a small amount of urine to wash it away. Generally urine just goes straight out, and the foreskin represents enough of a seal to prevent it from going back inside. But then I haven't seen smegma for years, and haven't any desire to, really.

I was taught by my mother to ckean under my foreskin when in the bath. I was probably a typically dirty small boy and so smegma built up and I then washed it away. Now I keep my dick scrupulously clean and I have neither seen nor smelt any smegma for years.
