Study pushes back origin of AIDS pandemic to 1908
By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The deadly AIDS virus first began spreading among humans at the turn of the 20th century in sub-Saharan Africa, just as modern cities were emerging in the region, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

The finding pushes back the origin of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by several decades, they reported in the journal Nature.

It is not politically expedient to acknowledge that research, I fear.

Taking "the Gay Plague" and making it of "normal origin" is not going to allow "the moral majority" to attempt to keep gay folk in the ghetto.

By "the moral majority" I mean, of course, people like Sarah Palin

I didn't read it, but did it say there were no homosexuals in 1908?

I know better. STDs are spread by promiscuity and there was no Kinsey in 1908 to tell us how they behaved then, but I suspect that priests and churches were more dominant then than now and that people in the UK had far fewer sexual partners.

What it was like in sub-Saharan Africa is anyone's guess.

Love,
Anthony

It is worth reading. It makes no comment about sexual orientation, simply about the living conditions that allowed the causative agent to spread when it might otherwise have died out.
