Dear Timmy,
I'd like an explanation of something. You live in England yet the web site is designed to be read by Americans?
"It's Only Me From Across The Sea" seems to me to imply your aim was to attract overseas readers and/or contributors. Still is, maybe?
Is there a story behind that or a simple explanation? I looked on the site and can't find one.
Love,
Anthony

The history goes back a long way. It was always my pen name in forums and the forums were always in the USA. But the pen name is very English,. coming from Barnacle Bill The Sailor.
I was reasonably well known for my pen name, so the site took on the name. It's probably documented here: http://iomfats.org/oddsandends/history/

Oh poor you, Timmy. The city I lived in before I moved to Florida was Wang Labs company headquarters. At one point in time, Wang employed almost one quarter of our residents. My company made the circuit boards that went in Wangs products. During the 80's, Wang was considered the best place in our area in which to work. I met Dr.Wang twice as he toured our facility.
What a small world.

You know, some time ago, when this board was very new, there was another guy from Lowell here. He went his way, presumably having had his needs met.
Wang was a good place to work, had a good 5 years there. Then it put its own head up its arse so far that it turned inside out and died.

Timmy, if memory serves me right, it was after Dr.Wang died and his son Fred took over, that the business started to falter. He just wasn't his fathers' son. I do remember seeing a picture of the younger son, Courtney and remember him to be quite handsome.
Lowell was never the same after 9/11 though and many of our hi-tech jobs ( like mine ) were exported to China. All part of Bushs' plan to create a global economy. That is why I am down south now.

Wang's last profitable year was ~1984, but it didn't realise it. I joined in 86 after being kicked out of Prime Computer by a jealous boss. #1 Son Fled was broadly useless. The Doctor said almost as much when Fled was redeployed, but the company had already gone down the toilet.
I was one of the few trying to get it to understand that Unix and open systems were the way to go, so, of course, I went instead, just before it did.
Lowell always looked as if it had the potential to be a ghost town. I guess it fulfilled its potential.

Timmy, yes, Lowell's demise came about when the Hi-tech bubble burst. I wonder if the Prime Computer that you spoke about is the same one I knew about. It was based in Natick MA and was once at the top of the heap. I think that they later merged with Computervision, then slowly died.
The company I was with at the time WAS at the top, Digital Equip. Corp. which was famous for having it's founder say that the thought of any one wanting or needing a pc in their own home was just plain rediculous. This was in around '87 or '88. Of course you you know what happened to that theory. DEC was swallowed up by Compaq which was then gobbled up by HP. In the process, the Lowell area lost tens of thousands of very good paying jobs.

Yup, Natick and Framingham. The old brewery building. Loads of ex Prime folk migrated to Wang.
We always dreamt of retiring to DEC - much less pressure!
