For me it works because it makes the point that we all - gay, straight, whatever - get nervous (terrified) about chatting people up: that it reinforces the things we have in common. It would be interesting to know whether straight guys identify with the gay character, or with his companions.
Incidentally, I came across this ad. 'cos I was served it on "friendsreunited". I can't really think on what grounds, as I'm probably outside the target demographic: there are no tick-boxes to say I'm gay (though my profile does say "out and proud, currently unpartnered").
