VIENNA, Austria (AP) — The Vatican announced Saturday that the Pope has tapped the Rev. Gerhard Maria Wagner, 54, to be auxiliary bishop in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria province. Wagner caused a stir in 2005 when he was quoted as saying that he was convinced that the death and destruction of Hurricane Katrina earlier that year was "divine retribution" for tolerance of homosexuals and laid-back sexual attitudes in New Orleans.

So, nothing new here, I suppose. The new pontiff is sending a clear message with this appointment.

Joseph Ratzinger, aka Benedict XVI, is pretty consistent: he's been keeping dodgy company ever since his days in the Hitler Youth.

Fortunately, most of the Roman Catholics I meet day-to-day think almost as badly of him as I do !

Is this the Holocaust Denier that was in the news recently, or another damfool appointment?

Unfortunately most of the catholics in positions of power i.e. the cardinals that elected him seem to be cool with ignoring or in agreement with these facts. The guy is positively nasty.

Maybe the lay people out there need to speak up....?

I think folk will just have to read Mike Arram's "Henry and the Estachon" as it gets uploaded here! But there is a lot of other Mike Arram to read to get the background first!

They should, and luckily they do. The German Chancellor voiced her disapproval publicly and quite clearly.

Still, I think you're right: the man is nasty. I thought the previous Pope was pretty conservative, but at least he seemed to be honest and balanced in his believes. This guy has a clear agenda of turning back the clock and he does not hesitate to enlist some very questionable people to reach his goal. Let's hope he doesn't last long.

Alternatively, pipo, we might hope he succeeds and brings the church into disrepute and makes it much harder to be a believer.

Then millions of people would not have the churches support in failing to adopt HIV prevention measures in Africa and elsewhere.

I'm inclined to think that might be better!

Love,
Anthony

The Bible can be used for any purpose even bashing the leaders of the Church.

Jesus "Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you compass sea and land to make one proselyte and when he is made you make him even more a child of hell than yourselves."

"You shut up the kingdom of heaven against men for you neither go in yourselves neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in."

"You devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayer you shall receive the greater damnation."

"you make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter but within they are full of extortion and excess."

"Even so you also outwardly appear righteous unto men but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity"

"Wherefore you are witnesses unto yourselves you are the children of those who killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers."

"Serpents generation of vipers how can you escape the damnation of hell?"

I seriously doubt Jesus would be very pleased with the political preachers in our time.Wink

Thing is I think God would wonder at silence in the face of the antichrist, don't get me wrong I don't think he is, though he does fits the profile of the whore of Babylon in my discernment, but so do all of the religions of man

I don’t judge him but we are commissioned be the word of God to test, does he exhibit the fruits of the spirit, I think you can find what those are in Galatians around 4:22. or there about.

No matter if you may or may not believe, what I read says Jesus the Christ did not come to bring fear or hate but love and grace.

Again, the bible does say “there is none righteous, no not even one” nevertheless I would go so far to say though we should not judge by our own standards, we have many books of wisdom where I find the fingerprints of God were we can find what is good like in the writings of the Bible or Siddhartha Gautama Buddha and many others books of wisdom around the world, and in none of them can I find what he seems to exemplify.

I will go on to say I have no religious or political affiliations or agenda…

I personally consider it a bit sickening to hear people like Pat Robertson say things like "The people of Dover, Penn. if a natural disaster comes your direction. Don't call on God you have already rejected him from your city."

That was in response to the Intelligent Design case where a Conservative Judge appointed by George W. Bush, said you can't teach ID in school science classrooms. The school board elections where every single person who put ID in the school was expelled by the voters.

Robertson also said basically "How dare those Liberals use the personal private sins of Good God Fearing Christian Republicans against them for their own political purpose." I think he was responding to the 2006 congressional elections.

I don't see any real redeeming quality in attempting to use God as a personal weapon to obliterate a political opponent. I doubt Jesus would be very pleased by being used in such a divisive manner. I actually consider what these political preachers are doing to be a problem for anyone who calls themselves a Christian. If not a potential problem for the WORLD at large.
