I read Nifty. There are stories there, amidst the crap, that I enjoy. Sometimes I invite an author from there to come here. But there is one classification of story I don't understand.
Why is bestiality there? What does it have to do with gay stories?
I read them sometimes. I can see why some of them have an appeal. After all, dogs don't kiss and tell. Allegedly! But what is a tale about sexual frolics with the family pet to do with homosexual stories?

Dear Timmy,
Some people have a category 'sexual adventurousness'. For those that don't understand what it is to be gay both sex with other men and sex with animals might appear to fall into that category.
But you knew that. And those of us that see sex as to do with loving wouldn't easily see sex with anyone but other people as offering much chance of loving - too much could not be reciprocated - so to us it is not attractive, even to read about.
But in imagination some science fiction has beings who can communicate and therefore can respond to and express loving feelings. Have you read "The left hand of darkness" by Ursula Le Guin?
I tell you today I need a chabe stove!
Love,
Anthony

And so we link unexpectedly from Bestiality via Le Guin to Orson Scott Card, who obviously disliked buggers. I would prefer to have an ansible. I suspect the tax on a chabe stove would be too high.
However I'm sure I could keep warm wrapped round a sweet young chav.
But the question is not "Why do folk write about it?" but "Why on Nifty?"

Well, Nifty isn't really a "Gay" place: it is more of a "Queer" place (check the 'mission statement' page).
So what is "Queer"?
"In contemporary usage, some use queer as an inclusive, unifying sociopolitical umbrella term for people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersexual, genderqueer, or of any other non-heterosexual sexuality, sexual anatomy, or gender identity." (thanks, Wikipedia - saved me having to think too hard!).
I've always taken Nifty as somewhere that almost any non-heteronormal story could find a home: though much of it is not of interest to me ... I think it's a really important and valuable resource, even though 90%+ of the stories are so poorly written.
Personally, Bestiality does not appeal. Though I can understand the appeal of yiffing (costume and body-make-up as animals then having sex, mainly among the 'Furry' community).
"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. ... Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night devoid of stars." Martin Luther King

Speaking of Yiffing (a new word to me too) I came across a couple of pics of two very fit young guys painted as some kind of spotted cat. Have to say I found them very stimulating, even had a very pronounced reaction, not sure why but I hope to come across more like that!
