I have sent many valentine's cards over the years. Mostly when I was a kid and had hopes. But I have never, not ever, received one from anyone at all.
That always struck me as weird. I wasn't ugly, was cute to some, knew girls form the sailing club who appeared attracted to me at times, snogged a good few at teenage parties with the lights out, tried to be romantic. I was a bit stand-offish, sometimes, but that ought not to matter.
I wonder what the boys thought when they got cards, sometimes. There were three that I sent them to, John, Paul, and Fraser. I made them correctly anonymous, and obviously they would not have expected a boy to be sending them, so nothing ever happened. I've never sent one to a girl.
But no-one even sent them as a joke, not even to tease me.
As an "adult" I never dated, not per se. There was one girl, the ever beautiful Dierdre, that I half dated, once. She was good company, and looked like Catherine Zeta Jones. Or Jones looked like Dierdre. The poor girl had a voice like a corncrake, but that was something you could get used to. Other girls were more like relationships than dating, and never in February, it seems.
