Several days ago i heard friends talk about a (possible?) hate crime that occured in a popular part of town. Midtown is the gay part of town. Shops, bars, restaurants, etc. that welcome the gay community are all located within a mile radius of Blake's in the park (the bar where the incident happened). I have been to the bar mentioned in the article and i can't imagine how this happened. The vitim's story sounds a little confusing. No doubt he was beat up, but was it a hate crime? Or was he too drunk that he got in a fight with some guys (gay guys) and is just making a big fuss about it by saying he was beaten up for being gay?
The area where the guy said he was attacked is very well lit. The bar has an entrance back there, also it is a parking lot. The time the incident took place was around midnight, which i know, from experience, people are just getting there to watch the nightly drag show. In the report he said some guys approached him and asked him if he was gay. He answered yes and the guys procceded to beat him up. They took him behind a dumpster and left him there. Later he got up and went to the security officer at the door, which filled a report to police. However, some parts of his story just don't add up. After all, report says he was heavily intoxicated and was even kicked out of the bar for being too drunk.
The community is shocked by the attack. Midtown is a well known part of town. It is no secret midtown is gay-town. As a consequence of the attack, people feel unsafe walking in an area, most people would say, considered safe to be yourself.
What do you guys think? Would you call this a hate crime?
Georgia law doesn't have hate crime laws based on sexual orientation. However, the police department in this county does report bias crimes. The attack is still under investigation.

Well, people don't generally kick you and break your teeth if they love you so it's something like hate. But whether it was because he was gay or drunk or did something offensive we don't know because he wasn't in a fit state to tell.
If you are on your own or with a group of guys that don't care enough to look after you when you get drunk then don't get drunk.
I don't understand the attraction it seems to have. Why spend money to get ill and incapable?
Love,
Anthony

I have a horror of the term "hate crime". I believe that assault is assault, and that assault should be punished as normal under the law.
I feel that the extra classification of crimes against blacks, whites, Hispanics, gays, lesbians, accountants, bricklayers, etc is a ridiculous knee jerk over zealous vote garnering piece of hypocrisy.
In the same manner I do not consider genocide or the holocaust to he special crimes. They are, simply, murder. And they need to be treated as such.
So I think he was assaulted.

I just heard this. Members of the LGBT community are infront of the GA capital, trying to convince legislators to change current hate crime laws to include gay people. I have know someone who will be speaking there.

I suppose if one has hate crime laws then they must be all embracing.
I'm not keen on cab drivers. if I hit one will that need to be classified as a hate crime too?
We over legislate instead of using our brains.

I agree with you Timmy, I don’t know why people think gays are all about peace and love anymore than the rest of the population.
Gays are just as prone to violence or maybe more so in certain segments. I mean after all considering the way gays are treated as they grow up, does not violence beget violence?
Nevertheless it is what it is and needs to be treated as such.
As has been suggested I think he was just drunk and acting the fool as they say and ended up insulting the wrong person.
People will tell you where they've gone
They'll tell you where to go
But till you get there yourself you never really know
Where some have found their paradise
Other's just come to harm
