Regrettably the lad is having his life made a misery by school bullies right now. Threats to break his legs!

Why in the world would they want to harm the lad. They should be full of pride that someone from their school actually got to participate in the Olympics, competing against the best of the best.

I regret these days our British society is full of deadbeats who hate; they hate everything around them, but most of all they hate themselves, partly because they have achieved nothing themselves to be proud of.

School bullies...
Not really a childish prank. Last week I came to realize how deep is the hurt that they inflict. As I threw away the invitation to my 40 year high school reunion, the vivid memories of sadistic cruelty led me to a lengthy crying spell. Maybe I'll get over it for the 45 year reunion.

Pride in the school is missing here. It's a place you have to go between 5 and 16. Some reports say that the school has failed to handle the problem, others say that pupils have been disciplined. Either way this ordinary kid with an extraordinary talent has still been made to feel awful.

That problem stems from the government's insistence on hamstringing teachers with red tape instead of allowing them to teach and inspire, in the main.

But it is really just the old problem, too, of jealous chavs making a decent kid's life a misery "because they can"

ITV teletext reported that Mr Daley is considering taking Tom out of the school. I'm sure Millfield will be at the head of the queue offering him a scholarship.

Yes, Timmy, it seems pretty clear that the school has failed to stop the bullying and in my opinion that is a serious weakness.

But very few schools do handle bullying well. I was lucky - my school did - but the state schools where I and my daughter have been governors have not been very good. And I'm told that, for example 'gay' is a common term of denigration in the playground.

A school can't change society but it can act to ameliorate society's worst weaknesses at least on its own premises. I wish more of them would try to do that.

Love,
Anthony
