About 90 people get swine flu and everybody starts wearing masks. One million people with AIDS and nobody wears a condom.

I have been out of circulation for 23 years, so I don't really know what is gong on nowadays. Yet with the seriousness of the disease and the number of cases out there, it would be quite astonishing if folks did not protect themselves. No doubt about it, a condom cuts way back on sensitivity for the user, but hey, what's the matter with a hand job once the penetration is done? I should think that the passive partner gets the same pleasure, condom or not.

Around here its estimated about 1 in 4 people in my country have AIDS - and they never seem to use condoms. Just what is wrong with the world? - That was retorical, btw, otherwise we might get fifty million responses.

I've been thinking about this for some time.

I think the answer is sex.

Swine Flue is not an STI, so it is something we can all fear "in public" without people realising that we have, or would like to have, sex. HIV is something that is below the waist, unless you contract it via blood products. So we can't talk about HIV in the same way. After all, sex is "dirty" and we can't talk about it.

Thats true - but the new one will be fifty times worse, i assure you. With barely a grade 9 education - the legal minimum requirement for all citizens before they may stop attending school here, a strong affiliation with the Communist Party and unresolved isshues regarding fraud never successfully brought before a court, because of a major major major throwing around of wheight and sly wiggling. I might conisder emigrating

I'd have to agree with those who are distressed with the actions of the current pope. I guess that he's just a product of his genetic heritage and upbringing however. And the church has no facility for impeachment of a pope. So we'll just have to hope for a quick call to his reward, for him.

If you *really* believe in determinism, Macky, you would have to say that no blame attaches to him.

If it doesn't follow from your belief then I think I don't understand what you mean by determinism.

But I am allowed to blame him - and I do, in particular for quite a lot of the transmission of HIV in Africa and for quite a lot of unwanted children that didn't get aborted.

Love,
Anthony

"If you *really* believe in determinism, Macky, you would have to say that no blame attaches to him."

A careful reading of my second sentence will show you that I did not apply guilt to the Pope for his actions. Unfortunately, some folks are so damaged by society and genes that they must be removed from society. But this is not their fault.

That sounds like an argument for eugenics.

Here in London (where around one in five gay men is HIV+) the really big and scary growth in HIV infections is in guys my age - fifties upwards. They are just informed enough to know that for many (not all) people, HAART and other contemporary treatments mean that HIV+ people can live for 20 or 30 years ... so foolishly reckon that even if they do get infected (and don't seek Post-Exposure Prophylaxis [PEP]), it won't mean all that much, compared to the undoubted ease and (probably) better sensation of barebacking. They expect to die *with* HIV, not *because* of it.

This is a load of cobblers, of course - all the HIV medications have side-effects varying from unpleasant to life-threatening in their own right. Not to mention the question of transmitting the virus to others ...

Hopefully, the phenomenon is confined to a fairly small age-group of those who just missed out on condom-free gay sex in the 1970s because they were not "out" or active, and may still hanker after it ... but still, the irresponsibility of some supposedly-mature guys leaves me almost speechless!

Eugenics isn't all bad. For instance, incest prohibitions keep genetic diseases at bay. So society practices eugenics to a certain extent. Problem is, you can't predict genetic susceptibilities to environmental conditions. Like people whose genes make them more susceptible to lung cancer from smoke. If we interfere with nature or the natural order or whatever word you prefer, too much we're bound to screw up.

We already have eugenics - aborting a fœtus because of its suspectibility to Downs Syndrome is just one example.

I think Macky might have been referring to prisons.

I know you've a get-out phrase in there ('too much'), but you must realise that you came close to condemning all the advances of modern medicine among a whole lot of things that make life better for those that have them.

Anthony,
Are you sure that there are ANY genetics based treatments for any malady? From what I've heard, recent advances in decoding The genome have identified certain genes as statistically likely to predispose or cause maladies, but other than Eugenics, this info has not yet yielded a single treatment. But the research is new and they are working on such things, so there is a certain validity to your point, that leads me to grasp at my 'most cases phrase'.

He's just the guy that posted the article on circumcision. First post per the counter. Its great how folks just drop in from the internet. Wouldn't it be great if we had a formal policy of greeting new posters to make them feel at home?

Dear Macky, when you wrote:

--------------------
I had no idea you were thinking of 'genetics based' treatments. I wasn't.

There are so many interferences with the natural order that are nothing to do with genetics, from most medicine to flying and taking a ride in a train.

And in a way, staying alive longer. The natural order of things would have had me dead by now. Penicillin saved my life at age 13. Now I have Bausch & Lomb lenses in both eyes and can see well enough to drive!

I'm in favour of interfering with the natural order of things while it brings these benefits.

Love,
Anthony

I agree totally. Excuse me that I was not as clear as I should have been that I was speaking exclusively about genetic science. Its different I think and requires special care. When you do genetic manipulations, I think you alter the course of nature's delicate balancing act. Could be good, like figuring out which kelp genes would allow raising wheat at the bottom of the oceans, but would that affect global warming by oxygenating the water or something?

We do not compulsorily sterilise people as did Sweden until very recently. One might argue that certain people shoudl never be allowed to breed (some of our MPs come to mind at present) but we still allow it.
