In my generation, nobody had this kind of courage. But one reads so many stories of today's youngsters standing up for themselves like this. Why wasn't this kind of chutzpah seen as recently as a decade or two ago?

And even the older gays are getting very brave in speaking up for themselves. Kicking this guy out 2 years before he was eligible for retirement is sick; unbelievable. Its too bad that he was forced into it...this kind of thing should be a personal decision. But I am happy this man has the courage to stand up for his rights.

OMG! What timing. The main character in my new story will eventually wind up at Fairfax High School. Maybe he'll have to run for prom queen too!

I was a bit disappointed to see the that article didn't mention the prom king or solicit his opinion of his "date." Did they dance?

Think good thoughts,
e

Fairfax high school.... one of my rival schools in high school :=)

Funny reading about this when our law makers in CA failed to change prop 8 just a few days ago.

I suspect he NEEDS to. What happens to his pension?

That does not belittle his courage.

The USA is one insular, sick and bigoted nation over homosexuality. We have openly gay military personnel who are allowed to go on pride parades in service uniform.

Macky, I recommend "Reflections of a Rock Lobster" by Aaron Fricke which was first published by Alyson in 1981 - that's nearly three decades ago and as it is autobiographical the events portrayed must from a while beforehand.
It's ISBN 0 932870 09 0 and I recommend it as it's well written and touching and extremely brave.

Love,
Anthony

You are right, Timmy. I do so hope that Obama is not being influenced by the voting power of the bigots. It is shameful that my country cowtows to such obvious purveyors descrimination.

Thanks Anthony. Sounds like a good one. I have always enjoyed biographical stuff. This one reminds me of my early 20s, when I sheepishly purchased a copy of a growing up gay autobiography called "The Best Little Boy in the World". These guys were trailblazers, however, and courageous relative to their times.

Amazing coincidence! Interesting question about the dance. I think that it would be wrong for the king not to dance with his queen. Yet, I can understand a straight king's consternation about dancing with a guy in current USA culture. How would you make the dance into a serious recognition that gays have always been culturally denied the romantic displays common to events like proms?

It wasn't so long ago that you were in high school,M. And I believe you were out in HS. That was brave. How much gay courage did you witness in your HS days?

The courage of gay youth that I have seen in this generation far exceeds that of previous generations. They are no longer willing to hide behind a beard (marry so people will think they are sraight). They are no longer willing to do things in dark and forbidding places. They are looking around at those who have gone befor us and have yelled "NO MORE". Im a firm believer that within the next two generations we will see a change so dramatic it wont be believed.

Guess we better hurry up tho, The world ends on Dec.21,2012.

You make me realize what 'Gay Pride' is, Rodger. It is not so much celebrating our sexual orientation, as celebrating our heros, who have, and who are, making the world a better place, not just for gays, but for everyone. MLK day celebrates racial equality. Will there ever be a day to celebrate equality despite race gender or sexual ordientation?

It was easy to be gay in my high school. I never experienced gay bashing or anything like that. We had strenght in numbers.

Public displays of affection (including kissing) between boys and boys, even girls and girls was not a big deal. During 9th grade, i was unaware all of this was going on. Mostly because i was afraid to come out and didn't notice the obvious. However, when i met this lesbian in 10th grade that introduced me to all the other queers (there were a lot of them) around the school, a whole new world opened up. By association, my friends started to figure out i was gay too. Many of them didn't cared and others were mad at me because i didn't tell them sooner Smile I received a lot of support, coming out was a pleasant experience. You can say i was fortunate. Sure there were homophobes and not everybody like the idea of watching two boys kissing (a lot of my girl-friends used to ask me to see me kiss another boy because it was 'hot' ) in the courtyard; on the other hand, most of the students were tolerant of such things and didn't care one bit.

So, i think there were a lot of couragous students in my HS. We had a gay/straight alliance group, some of the teachers were openly gay, and many students were not afraid to be feminine.

We all have pride in our gayness. It may have manifested in other ways but we knew (sort of anyways) that we were marching to different music. Today's gay youth is celebrating openly and with swagger. One day gay elders will be able to swagger too.
