The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

A new slant on the saying 'Cutting off your nose to spite your face.'
I dream of boys with big bulges in their trousers,
Never of girls with big bulges in their blouses.
…and look forward to meeting you in Cóito.

Just goes to show you the incredible power of love. The awesome pain of the poor lad who felt it necessary to do this to express himself. This os very sad.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!

True, Macky, the power of love is a power. I guess we all need to remember that like all powers, it can lead to unwanted consequences.

Macky, I've thought about this for a couple of days, and I don't think that I agree with you. In the act of this young man I don't see frustrated love: I see the enormous destructive power of rage and hate. I think this was done to spite his family, as it were. Whichever of us is right (or wrong) I agree with you that this is very sad indeed.

JFR, My realization that you are right set off a shower of sparks of realization in my mind.
My confusion stemmed from the fact that the hate was engendered by the love. Love, by its very nature has a polarizing effect, the beloved at one pole and competitive siutors and objectors at the other pole. That is a discussion point in itself. But you lead me to a second realization.
The lad's cutting off his penis was a case of "Suicide Lite", if you will. This led me to conjecture that all suicide is an act of hate. Like most things born of hate, it is destructive. I used to think of suicide as a release from unbearable pain. But I have begun to think of it as an impotent growl of rage. The siucide has let his hate destroy him. Thus he has performed the ultimate act of submission before his enemies. Am I right?
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!

Macky,
I don't know the answer to your question. And I'd rather not discuss it in too great detail because I would imagine that there are people here who have attempted suicide or at least thought about it.
Whether or not suicide is an act of rage or of desperation is something that neither I nor you can know, never having been there. However, I have read on many occasions that attempted suicide is a desperate call for help and attention. In that sense, the fault lies with those who did not perceive the need for help or did not pay attention.
Here, in Israel, we have a perfect example of what I am saying. Only a few years ago Dudu Topaz was a top-rating TV entertainer. (I never liked him because his humour always catered to the lowest common denominator.) He thrived on audience adulation. Then, a couple of years ago, the TV moguls stopped slotting him - probably because his ratings were slipping.
Recently, several high-ranking executives in the TV business have been viciously attacked by thugs - one of the victims was a woman. To cut a long story short, last week Topaz was arrested and charged with organizing those attacks. (He paid his neighbour, a shady character it seems with the necessary connections, large sums of money to hire the thugs who did the deeds.) Under police interrogation he broke down and confessed. This (Thursday) morning he attempted suicide in the lockup, by injecting himself with four doses of insulin at the same time. (He is diabetic.)
His friends, all well-known here in the entertainment world, are now beating their breasts because they did not see the signs coming. He needed the limelight and the adulation and without it he became desperate, and planned to pay back all those who refused him his rightful place on prime time TV.
He is now in hospital, under guard, and is doing well; so he will get his opportunity to star in a courtroom drama. Pundits say that he can get up to ten years. Sic transit gloria mundi.

J F R, I understand your consternation about discussing suicide. I am not sure whether it would be helpful, hurtful, or both. So if no one feels strongly about it either way, I guess it would be best to drop the discussion of it.
