By Brody Levesque (Bethesda, Maryland) Oct 27 | There was an article published on pinknews.uk: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2009/10/26/christian-woman-may-sue-after-police-investigate-gay-hate-crime-letter/# about the following which generated 74 or so comments thus far. I followed thru to the link and found this and decided it might be interesting to see what the regulars here, especially the UK contingent, thought of this. Apparently the DAILY MAIL (UK) has been whipping up a publicity storm regarding this woman.

What grounds could this woman use for her lawsuit? Her actions were investigated and it was determined that no crime had been committed. The idea of a lawsuit is really stupid.

Neither do I agree with the council member who turned the letter over to the police. Calling someone a sodomite is a long way from a hate crime. Expressing dislike for homosexuals is a long way from a hate crime. I think the council member acted stupidly by doing anything beyond her letter in reply.

sending the police was WAY out of line. She wrote a letter, she expressed her opinion but she didn't hurt anyone.

Having your feelings hurt is NOT a hate crime.

Something in the Mail story that doesn't seem to be in the Pink News article:

"Mrs Howe claims she was 'verbally abused' while distributing 'Christian leaflets' at the march in the centre of Norwich in July. She said someone 'whispered something in my ear and disappeared'. She fired off a letter to the council describing the march as a 'public display of indecency' that was 'offensive to God'."

This kind of changes how I view her role in this.

An opinion piece in the Mail that I agree with (mostly)

Well, this may get me into some hot water, but...
I do not think that the police or council were out of line. This is the line in the sand. Christians like all Americans have a freedom of speech right, but for a long time, this right has been abused by christians and like minded folks and it's led to horrendous consequences, maybe akin to a pogrom. It needs to stop.

The thing about this is that we have a long tradition of listening to batty old christians n the UK. Usually we laugh at them, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Whitehouse was listened to for a while because we couldn't escape her.

As for Sodomite Girl in the article, I haven;t even noticed her. And the people the letter was sent to were stupid. Bin, Bin, Bin.

The woman was a complete pain in the arse. I was amazed that my father, who was head of the light programme, actually took her seriously enough to meet her and listen to her complaints.

It is truly amazing what people can get away with in the name of religion.

Love,
Anthony
