today is the 45th year I have known it was the birthday of the boy I fell for in 1965.
While it can easily be argued that it might still matter because I have still remembered it, my bran remembered numbers. Today he is 58. And today is the first year it hasn't mattered. I seem to be growing up at last.
I can look, at last, of pictures of him as a kid and see why I fell for him.
I can look back over my life and understand why I failed to tell him.
I can look at a picture as he is today and be sad that the boy has run away and all that appears to remain is a sad shell of an old adult.
But he no longer has power over me. I have got that back, and now I have power over me

So after 44 unhappy anniversaries, Timmy, at last you have come to a happy anniversary.
For that you deserve considerable congratulations. I suspect a lesser man could not have done it.
Love,
Anthony

Doesn't stop me being sad that the boy seems to be absent in the man he is today, but that is a different thing entirely

This had a nice tone to it and sounded very positive to me. I almost expect your post to go on to say 'and yes, perhaps there are some happy memories to be salvaged there'.
