By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Dec 1 | The Washington D.C. City Council in its first of two votes on the issue of allowing same-sex marriage in the nation's capital, passed the bill 11 to 2. Council members Marion Barry (Ward Eight) and Yvette Alexander (Ward Seven) were the only dissenting votes against the measure.

D. C. City Councilmen @ Large Phil Mendelson stated that he expects that the second and final vote later this month will also pass, and D.C.'s Mayor, Adrian Fenty, has already stated that he intends to sign the measure into law.

According to a spokesperson for the City Clerk's office, Marriages would begin in the city as soon as the bill passes a period of Congressional review. Most likely in late February or by March 1st, 2010.

A spokesperson for House Speaker Nancy Peloisi-(D) California indicated that Congress will likely not alter the law and that it will take effect after the 30 day Congressional review period.

The District will join Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Connecticut who already allow same-sex marriage. New Hampshire will join them Jan. 1.

This signing has been in the face of a major blackmail attempt by the Roman Catholic Church who will be withdrawing a load of charitable services (or have said they will) in an attempt to rule the USA from Rome.

Their stance was and is "Pass this bill and we take our ball and go home."

Time to get that ball and go, then.

In case anyone doubts this, it's well documented.

It seems that there are other stages to go, so expect a huge rearguard action by that church.

The USA and DC must not back down. Doing so would be tantamount to appointing the pope as president of the USA.

I have now had the chance to put an opinion piece out into what I view as my mainstream world. I think the USA is in the middle of a crisis that it does not understand over this, and there is a battle for independence happening right now.

For what you may wish to make of it, please wander over to http://timtrent.blogspot.com/2009/12/obama-survives-attempted-coup-detat-by.html
