One of the nice things about this forum are the various national identities represented here.
Timmy does his best to present current affairs of an English nature, politics and social events that I would otherwise never see in the American media.
Brody gives me a good look at the best and worst of American politics, humor and social commentary. It's always quite an education to log on and see what my government is doing.

And so when I run across news like this from a reliable source I have to wonder at the way things are here and what my brothers across the ocean think of our American politics. In light of the article presented below, I often wonder how the American version of democracy is viewed.

I would like to see any comments about what I view as dispicable behavior by this individual who seems to play the political game for all it's worth. In light of the fact that America is always critical of foreign governments and the corruption we claim to see, what does someone like our Senator Shelby say to the world about us?

I think the US needs a decent scandal to rip these people from office. We've had a load of UK sleazeball MPs having to resign. I claim credit for a great deal of helping one of them go, both at a public meeting and then on the local radio station.

The USA needs something similar to discredit the bad ones and get rid of them.

Politics in my town of Santa Clarita, CA just got a bit nervy. I suspected that TeaBaggers were in the community but those who consider themselves such had been rather quiet up to a few weeks ago. The former mayor Bob Kellar made a remark that he was a "proud racist" which was not mentioned in local media until YouTube video made his comment front and center. Majority of townspeople came to his aid and offered support.
I have made attempts to find out what has officially been done about this incident. The media and city government has literally been silent.
I sent a letter to city hall to express my anger and shame of living in this community.
Politics as usual in America? Silence for the right wing of America.

By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Feb 14 | In a recent poll conducted after a fiery meeting of the city council of the city of Santa Clarita, California, January 25th, where a large crowd had gathered supporting Councilman Bob Kellar who called himself a "proud racist," found that a large percentage of the city's voters didn't take issue with his position.
Kellar, who has publicly stated he is vehemently opposed to illegal immigration, said his words were taken out of context and that he abhorred racism. "Racism is wrong and should never be tolerated, however, the issue on the table is illegals and the failure of our government at all levels to deal with this `issue. I am an American, a proud one. And I believe it is time we stand behind our laws and the principles that have made this nation great."

Nearly all of the overflow crowd that attended the council meeting seemed to be in agreement and as one Kellar supporter stated; "It's about red, white and blue - not white, brown and black," said Robert Crooks, a Canyon Country resident and president of a local Minuteman chapter. "It's about America, we the people. We are not racists."
Those who support Kellar have called him a hero, saying no other politician has stood up to "decry the massive impact of illegal immigration on our community." They called on the city council to enforce laws against hiring undocumented laborers, especially those who stand on corners under "No Stopping Anytime" signs, "waiting to find jobs meant for Americans," as a local Minuteman group said. And many also criticised Mayor Laurene Weste, and council members Marsha McLean, Frank Ferry, and Laurie Ender for not publicly supporting Kellar.

The issue started after a January 16th rally that Kellar spoke at where he referred to a statement from President Theodore Roosevelt that said the United States only has room for one flag and one language. He said he had quoted it at a past city council meeting;
"The only thing I heard back from a couple of people was `Bob, you sound like a racist'," Kellar said. I said, `That's good. If that's what you think I am because I happen to believe in America. I'm a proud racist. You're darn right I am'."

In a rather ironic twist, as Tuesday's city council meeting was happening, a local group was presenting a play exploring immigrant issues and seeking to end discrimination.
Santa Clarita's Human Relations Forum was scheduled to present the play "Wheels" at the Rancho Pico Junior High School Auditorium as part of the city's "A Season of Diversity program."
The play explores the freedom, mobility and dreams associated with United States citizenship and "will offer perspective on immigration, as well as the privileges and responsibilities of United States citizenship," through the eyes of a Salvadorian-American youth named Oscar.

"The City's `A Season of Diversity' program is devoted to empowering community members to eliminate all forms of discrimination,' Mayor Weste said in a statement. "The Wheels compassion play helps achieve this goal by offering residents a compassionate view of the immigration experience through a young person's eye."

That has been the only piece of news about Kellar so far. And silence since then. No mention of it at the local newspaper (The Signal) or on the local radio station. No mention of any further hearings or actions from the city's web site. I haven't had the guts to check out local right wing web sites for any news. Any other ways to get updates?
