I hear that the DVD that Stonewall produces to combat homophobic bullying in schools is now available to buy at http://www.stonewall.org.uk/fit/order It's designed as a teachers' resource.
To people who work with young people it is free.
I hope it doesn't offend against any rules to post this.
Love,
Anthony

I suppose this is nothing anyone wants to read, but it's something that needs to be remembered. Any time a child dies it changes the world, for who knows what impact that young life could have had. It's been a year since this young man ended his life, and for no apparent reason other than the cruelty of his peers.

I could rant about the lack of justice, the apparent indifference of school leaders, but why...I am just eternally sad over things like this. Next Friday, April 16th, is the National Day of Silence sponsored by student groups in schools across the country.
It's interesting to note that there are many opposed to such a student protest which amounts to nothing more than maintaining silence to call attention to bullying and other gay rights violations. Solidarity is usually the first sign of revolution and the need for change. For one young man it is already too late, I wish him peace.

... in the first place?
As a high- and parochial-school student in the 1960's, the three schools (2 public and one private) that I attended as a teenager all had 'zero-tolerance' for any behaviour of an aggressive nature, by either student or faculty. Such behaviour was cause for immediate suspension, or outright dismissal dependent entirely at the discretion of the Board upon determination of fault and severity. This was without regard to whether such behaviour was Gender, Race, Religious, Age, or Political in origin.
As students, this policy was probably the first rule of conduct we were required to learn upon our first attendance in grade 9. It was also understood there would be no 'Court of Appeal' for transgressors. We either learned to live with it, or we were gone. Simple as that.

Not dead. It was entered carelessly and not tested. I have edited it to work.

I can only agree with you, Warren...when did we lose control or did we ever have it?
The US of A has a proud history of hate speech. There's a derrogatory nickname for almost every ethnic race.(I'm not sure we have one for Canadians, sorry) The largest portion of hate speech is aimed at minorities, I have a theory.
This is where I throw out the disclaimer, these are only words:
For a long time the words negro, nigra and finally nigger were the top of the hate speech scale. Forcefully imported Africans were considered sub-human, the word nigger is filled with hate and survived in constant use until the civil rights movement forced it out.
The word is politically incorrect these days even though some stupid rap stars call one another by that name just to stir the fire. But the word had to go and so what were self-serving hate mongers to do? Every jerk needs an invective to hurl, and so the gay community became the target.
Just look at the Christian Right who have made gays the stand in for hate speech. Damn fags, all those faggot child molesters, perverted queers...sound familiar? I personally feel proud, as a gay man I have become the next target for civil rights in this country.
But in our schools we tolerate comments like "That's so gay" when speaking of something bad, kids do it every day and you can't tell me the teachers don't hear it. When intolerance is found to be acceptable then it flourishes and kids have been getting away with this for years.
Hate speech needs to be added to a list of federal crimes so that every state will have to recognize it. Then when some young gay kid is called a fag in front of his peers out comes the FBI and drags the bully away to be charged with a hate crime.
If it's not OK to call a young black child a nigger then why is it acceptable to call a young gay boy a fag? Neither action is acceptable, but only one child is protected.
We can only imagine the hurt when such invectives are used against a child who isn't gay, remember what happened at Columbine High School. Hate speech breeds hateful activity. But to call a gay boy a fag and have it all lead to suicide...that's murder. >

Sorry to hear the link is dead. I think you can use a search engine to find the web site of the Stonewall Lobby Group and it is surely easy from there.
I don't post anopther link because it, too, might get old.
Love,
Anthony

Read above. It was never dead. It contained extra characters, notably a "." Never put punctuation after a URL and always test links when posting.
