The Israeli government has banned Apple's iPad, saying its wireless signal is too strong and could interfere with devices that operate at a lower power.

The Ministry of Communications said the ban was instituted earlier this week because the iPad's Wi-Fi wireless technology was built to the U.S. standard, which allows stronger signals than those allowed in Europe and Israel.
"This device's wireless strengths violate Israeli law and will overpower other wireless devices in Israel," ministry spokesman Yechiel Shavi said.

Mr. Shavi said once Apple releases a version of the device built according to European wireless specifications, the ban will be reversed. An Apple spokeswoman said the "iPad complies with international industry standards for Wi-Fi specifications." The decision has left many scratching their heads. Travelers have been bringing laptops and cellphones configured to U.S. standards, including other Apple devices with the same wireless configuration, into Israel for years without incident.

Some Israeli lawmakers alleged on Friday the decision undermines Israel's status as a global leader in the high-tech industry.

Industry experts say the iPad's wi-fi signal is actually weaker than comparable devices already sold in Israel.

Yes, you have to wonder at the reaction to the newest gadget on the electronics market. It boggles the mind that Israel would do such a thing. Or does it?

Taken from the Wikipedia site: reference to Steven Jobs, founder of Apple:
Jobs was born in San Francisco and was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs (née Hagopian) of Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California who named him Steven Paul. Paul and Clara later adopted a daughter, who they named Patty.

Jobs' biological parents, Joanne Simpson and *** Abdulfattah Jandali—a Syrian Muslim graduate student *** who became a political science professor—later married and gave birth to Job's biological sister, the novelist Mona Simpson.

It couldn't be that, could it? In this day and age is the government of Israel that stupid?Confused??

Chris, you would be amazed at the crass stupidity of which our government is capable. It puts its collective foot in it again and again. We have a prime minister whose mouth, IMHO, is the most efficient organ in his head. (He also has another rather efficient organ elsewhere about his person which got him into trouble a decade or so ago.) However, whatever the "real" reason for this incredulous ban it cannot have anything to do with Apple or its CEO. After all, you will find other Apple products around Israel in their thousands and Jobs himself has been fêted in the country on a couple of occasions.

FWIW, I think that the answer to the conundrum may be linked to the fact that Apple has not yet officially introduced Ipad here, so all the Ipads that are in use here at the moment are a kind of "contraband" and the Apple outlets "are not amused". Just my guess.

OK folks, you can stop holding your collective breaths! The government has relented and the importation of iPads is once again permitted. The official "excuse" is that there had been a concern that iPads would interfere with the security forces communications channels and that the problem has now been resolved. They couldn't bring themselves to say quite simply, "Sorry, we are idiots and we boobed."
