A civil servant in the UK foreign office has been transferred to "other duties" for suggesting in an official memorandum that during his visit to Britain His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI should be invited to:
* bless a new gay bar
* open a home for unmarried mothers
* launch a new brand of "Benedict Condoms".
Why on earth did Foreign Secretary Milleband see fit to apologise to the Vatican? I think these are excellent ideas.

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

I'm with you on that! Is there a reference for the report?

... the apology I mean, not the substance of the memorandum.
Just what is so disturbing about The Vatican marketing a line of contraceptive devices entitled "Benedict"; or Cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger opening Abortion and single Women's Health Clinics; or The Vatican's funding Children's Help and Counselling Services, amongst others?
I've previously referred to the Banco Ambrosio scandal in the mid-to-late 1970's, and it's nearly having brought about financial ruin upon The Vatican; the crisis being of similar severity to that which the Church today faces with the Abuse disclosures.
What had been so startling, and damning (for the times), about the revelations of Banco Ambrosio's many dubious investments on behalf of The Vatican (Banco Ambrosio was owned outright by The Vatican at the time) is that The Vatican apparently was the largest, and controlling shareholder in a Swiss Company (I can't remember its' name, and frankly it really doesn't matter as they are gone now, broken up and long ago divested) which was the then largest pharmaceutical corporation in Europe (and likely the World) and they in turn (apparently) had controlling interest in the then Warner-Lambert and Upjohn companies (both now owned by Procter & Gamble through their long-time subsidiary Richardson-Merrill), each company themselves being amongst the largest manufacturers and distributors of Birth Control pills and Contraceptive devices. Of course, the 1960's and 1970's being the time of great upheaval, and revolutionary thought, amongst women Worldwide, and their demanding their right to control their bodies and choices; birth control being at the forefront of these challenges; and of course The Vatican being their largest opponent, not-with-standing their profit-mongering from sale of the very Contraceptive mechanisms the Church daily railed against.
Given this, I really can't see why any fuss is being made about a line of "Benedict" condoms; it's, LOL, simply another of those cases of been there, done that already! Moreover, the only real concern about the project I would have is whether they could actually manufacture them large enough (full-body anyone?) to protect the children against future abuses by priests, and whether condom machines everywhere would likely be able to dispense them at a price the children could afford in order that they might avail themselves of this level of protection.

I like Timmy's citation so much better. Here in the USA we get something boring like this: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/eu_pope_britain

Here is the original article from the Sunday Telegraph:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/7628752/Ministers-apologise-for-insult-to-Pope.html
What is appalling to me is the PC result of a trivial action.
I understand brain-storming to be throwing every idea into the ring and throwing out the rubbishy ones. If brain-storming is to be creative, it includes having fun. The brain-stormers had their fun, then some PC creep leaked the minutes, probably for a nice little earner and a big helping of hypocrisy, and you have a full blown diplomatic row.
The appalling thing is lack of common sense and lack of integrity. The content is irrelevant, the consequences weren't.
