This is completely off-topic, but I found it absolutely fascinating. This movie was shot from a San Francisco streetcar in April 1906 (!) just a few days before the great earthquake, it so happens.

The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

Yes, JFR, it was very interesting. Do you know what street that was? Are any of those buildings still there? Do you have any other details? I'd expect that road accidents would be quite common with such driving/walking habits!
Love,
Anthony

Yes, Anthony, it does look as if the concept of "Safe Driving" was as yet unknown. It looks as if everybody had the right of way! The information that I have is that the cable car is travelling down Market Street. I understand that the clock tower which can be seen in the distance, at the Embarcadero wharf, is still there.

The exact date the film was made has been ascertained from the streets wet from recent heavy rainfall and shadows indicating time of year and actual weather and conditions which are on historical record. Even when the cars were registered at to whom has been ascertained! It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to New York for processing.

No stop lights, stop signs, divider lines, pedestrian walkways. How would a modern driver negotiate such a chaotic scene. I wonder if the internet highway is just as chaotic today.

Cool movie!

Very cool! Thanks JFR - looks like our main street in rush-hour.

But are the men all Mormons? The only collars & ties we see around here are on Mormons.

And, i thought that San Francisco was all hills?

cheers
