I'd be the last one to say I am aware of the inner workings of all these night time television shows, although I haven't paid attention to the Broadway theatre scene in recent years either.
Kirstin Chenowith rings a bell, and I used to read Newsweek magazine, but I never saw articles like this. It seems what we have is an openly gay writer for Newsweek bashing gay men who perform in roles depicting straight men. A straight Ms. Chenowith takes exception and calls the gay writer a homophobe. Did I miss something here?
From what I read he's critical of gay men playing straight roles on stage and television, and his review of the shows in question is very gay in its perception and presentation. But homophobic? I've seen lots of bad acting in my time, gay and straight, that's a casting issue. But bad gay writers?
The entertainment industry has more closet doors tightly locked than any other profession. I can't blame those who are not out because they are afraid of labels and know it will hurt their chances of working. And then comes this moron who writes for Newsweek. He's a dumb ass, not homophobic.
I applaud Ms. Chenowith for supporting her fellow cast member, she just chose the wrong approach. I think after posting an article with such extremely poor taste that Ramin Setoodah will find himself on the outside of gay life for a while, who wants to talk to an idiot like that? Read on:
