Everytime I look at the news it's another bad situation in Texas, this is no different. The point of charter schools was to offer students an alternative to the public schools where many of them cannot or will not learn. I doubt this qualifies as a teachable moment.
With the advent of cell phones that have cameras we get to see what these students face in school. This time the bully is a teacher and she was caught in the act.
I don't agree when the school administration says they handled the situation appropriately. Firing the teacher is a given, why wasn't she arrested for assault? And as if suggested other teachers watched then they deserve a flogging and dismissal as well.
The lawsuit will not do much to refocus this child on his education, but maybe the monies which will finally be awarded will allow his mother to put him in a proper school. Of course that decision might be difficult.

I am having imense difficulty getting my head around this article. What indeed has happened?
We have had a couple of major incidents like Columbine here. Dunblaine and one in the South. I forget where exactly but there was speedy action and we don't allow guns .. not that that stops the criminal classes getting cheap ones from eastern europe.
Don't know what the answer is though. But I am deeply saddened at this situation some innocent kids are going to get slaughtered before long ..

Obviously inexcusable. Firing and barring from future work with kids totally necessary at the very minimum.
However, maybe we should question the obvious. A charter school...is that a school that is run by a company that makes money for it's owners? Has the district that contracted with this company made sure the student/teacher ratio is manageable, given the problems that these students have? Are supports available to these teachers? Suitable training for this type of class room? Is the company skimping on necessary things in order to make more money? Does the district that contracted the school do due diligence? Do they monitor their contractors?
It's just too easy to put all the blame on one scapegoat and claim that everyone else is lily white and pure. I hope someone looks into how this school is run and makes sure that they are not setting up the conditions for this sort of thing to happen. I hope the district that contracted this school is investigated for their monitoring of the people they farm their kids out to.

... were patently clear from the article when initially posted, and the one I read earlier this afternoon; it seems that the text has now been edited and additional detail provided.
1) A "Charter School" in Texas is some sort of alternative teaching facility that attempts to educate children that are otherwise apparently not welcomed in the mainstream Public Schools system. There is NOW no mention of the nature of the attending children in the article; but, there were indications in the earlier draft that these were children with behavioural and learning difficulties.
2) The reference to teachers having to becoming "not only an educator but also a bouncer, an enforcement officer" remains; and that they chose to keep that thought in the article is disturbing in of itself, and I have to ask why it is that the teachers would feel beholden to have to assume such a posture at all?
Neither of the aforementioned would in any manner excuse Miss Davis' attack upon the child; but, it does potentially lead to questions about the nature of the school and it's mandate.

In Los Angeles, a charter school is one which is run by parents, teachers and local community people. The principals at charter schools are selected by these three groups of people. Curricula are written by these groups as well, as long as they follow California Standards. It's not a perfect system but it works well in the LAUSD.
That said, Texas... !!
