Last week to the day before vacation! Last night parental permission was finally given for the Great BikeTrek of '10. Aaron, Patrick, Mitch and me are doing the whole canal trail from Georgetown to Cumberland and back in four days. This will be totally awesome.

Wow...what a great adventure for you!
As a Boy Scout we made a similar trek by canoe and it took us five days traveling one way, a bicycle would have been so much nicer. That was back in the day when most of the canal was open (and no, I did not meet George Washington along the way). As I recall flooding destroyed the canal some years later and only the towpath was restored.
One evening rather late we stopped to camp beside the canal and discovered the flat space was actually an old roadbed, there was asphalt two inches under the soil making it impossible to stake out tents. I slept under the stars with my own two friends, a beautiful night I will never forget.
So enjoy the ride and the companionship of your friends, you can't buy memories like this later in life.

Not familiar with that trail system. Is it paved? Can you swim in the canal? Is it mostly rural with plenty of places for camping?
Half the fun in the adventure is in the planning. You and your buds will spend many hours making lists together and gathering gear and just sharing time with each other. Sounds like a great start to a summer vacation.

Good questions, Paul. The canal is far from it's glory days, but it is still a challenge that anyone might enjoy:

It's a really great ride. Kudos for riding it. I'd recommend mountain or cross bikes because of the surface. Mostly hard packed gravel, but some places have pretty severe potholes. Be safe and enjoy.

So, how was the cycling adventure? You're certainly not going to let us hang in anticipation of a description of your travels.

I would be happy to talk to you about biking if you want to write to rickthecabinboy@gmail.com I do not visit the forum very much and do not post things here anymore. This place is way too political, and obviously "my" politics and social views are not "theirs"

Why not air your views? Only by doing so can the flavour be changed. Otherwise the status quo is a self perpetuating thing.
