Tonight on BBC 1 at 9.00 pm. Michael, the son of the family, announces that he is gay. Might be interesting and some should be able to follow it on BBC iPlayer if they can't watch it on-air.
Hugs
Nigel
PS - I've always had the hots for Michael (Gabriel Thomson).

Bollocks I say. He's snogged around with too many a gal to be gay. I used to see it on tv before I took my current job. I haven't seen an episode since season 8. Good show, and he was looking mighty fine when I last saw an episode. It'd be nice if he did 'come out' though. ;-D
Is there anyplace online I can watch current episodes?
NM, easier to find than I thought it would be.

To avoid any spoilers, all I'll say is...I don't like his new haircut much at all. Otherwise, I laughed more during that twenty minutes than I've laughed in a very long time. Darned good show that, and not just this epi.
Thanks for the heads-up Nigel, and thus inspiration to find the show online somewhere and enjoy it again. I'll be catching up on it!
Nigel, what do you say to this theory - It was a dream of Janie's? She got a place of her own, was the responsible one, and all that, Mike was gay but that went all wrong in her dream for her though, seeing as how she couldn't come to get the parents to be mean to him even in her dreams. Not to mention no Kel anywhere to be seen. And she got to say "I'm loving this!" many times! I say it turns out to be her dreaming is all, the whole episode. eh?

Hi Smokr!
First of all try this link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00t44jz/My_Family_Series_10_The_Sonll_Come_Out/
It may be restricted outside the UK, ie the BBC's licence fee area.
The first thing to remember is that it is a TV comedy programme and that logic and consistency are not high on the agenda. The present moment and the laughs are what count.
Yes, Michael did snog around with lots of girls, but he never really got anywhere. Then meeting a gay guy pushed him over the edge in the other direction. In my youth I snogged around with girls (I won't say lots), but I never found it satisfying or fulfilling. I still prefer(red) boys.
As far as Janie is concerned, I won't even go there.
Let's face it. Michael and Janie are both as big egocentric shits as their father. But they're funny.
Hugs
Nigel

It's quite nauseating, really. And yet another lousy portrayal of homosexuality on UK TV.

BBC will not work over here, was one of first places I tried.
I will agree that consistency and realism is not high on the list for sitcoms, but it really seems so out of left field for Mike to suddenly pop out with that. Of course I could have missed countless hints and such, not seeing the show for so long.
But to have him so suddenly be gay when he's always been such a chickdog for so long, it's so contrived and such, especially to me who's missed a full season and part of the season before. Meh. Just laugh and enjoy and don't over-think it I guess.
I really do wish he hadn't gone fuzztopped though! He had such nice hair and was becoming such a hottie! Now with that almost skinhead look....IDK...bleh
Tim, at least he isn't suddenly a mincer. Besides, how great a portrayal of gays can you expect on a sitcom? I didn't see it was so bad. At least it wasn't a serious portrayal in a serious drama anyway.

The worst aspect from my point of view is that Gabriel Thomson is five or six years older that the character of Michael which he plays.
It doesn't matter later in life, but a 22 year old playing a 15 or 16 year old is weird. He got away with it in my mind until I found out how old he really was.
The BBC appears to be under some pressure from above to portray gay characters. When something like that is forced it can have disastrous results. It ought to be allowed to evolve in order to work.

Is the character meant to be 15? Good lord.

The character is meant to be at the very least 18 at this point, as he is allowed into bars and taverns and can buy his own drinks, as well as drinks for others.
And besides, actors have been playing younger characters on tv for as long as there have been shows. I know of no shows wherein the characters age one year every season. Well, maybe some very truly awful shows that are so very popular but make me sick.

He was 15 in the earlier series.
Another programme I watch is 'Outnumbered'. The younger son Ben's voice is breaking apparently at the age of 10.
Look at the older son Jake's eyes. They are a beautiful and intense shade of blue. Pity he's got such a silly Christian name in real life - Tyger.
It might be an Equity requirement as no two members can have exactly the same name. A friend's son, Ian Alexander B****, has to call himself Zander professionally.

It's a small world. At least he is playing the part of someone his own age.
