By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) AUG 18 | As pupils prepare to collect their AS and A-level results, Stonewall is asking all lesbian, gay and bisexual A-level pupils going through the clearing process, and all AS level pupils beginning to fill out UCAS forms to use Gay By Degree – Stonewall’s online guide to how Gay-friendly every UK university is. [ http://www.gaybydegree.org.uk/ ]
Luke Tryl, Stonewall’s Education Officer, said:
"We launched this online guide last month and we’ve already had very positive feedback. Because it’s the first of its kind, many lesbian, gay and bisexual people have contacted us saying they wish it was around when they were applying to uni. Now we want to make sure it’s used by those pupils who are deciding where to take their talent and tuition fees."
Gay By Degree, supported by Square Peg Media, measures how gay-friendly each university is based factors including whether there is an active student LGBT Society, if LGBT specific careers advice and events are offered and membership of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme for employers.
It also contains gay-specific advice about the university experience.

As an American I had to have these AS/A Level exams explained to me. Goodness, what pressure to place upon sixteen and seventeen year old students.
I have just finished asking my young friend Tom (I call him English Tom) about his exams and if he was aware of this website, he was not. Thank you, Brody, he does know now even though he has already been accepted into a university. Like many gay students, his objective for years has been in the field of art, and from what I have seen of his work he is quite good.
Somehow students in the fields of art, literature, music and drama seem to be more accepting of LGBT students. Just entering such a course of study is often a reason to assume that someone is LGBT, but intelligent minds know better. University is often the first place a LGBT student has the freedom and opportunity to explore his/her sexuality, academics often foster that sense of freedom. It also helps to be away from parents.
So here's to those like Tom, I wish him and all his friends a gay old time at university. I would hope no less and expect a lot more.

Over in Los Angeles, the big college news is discussion whether USC will have another banner year in football. Good to have priorities.
