So...a bunch of stupid right wing Christians are at it again. I don't suppose any of you here are surprised in the least.

Christianity is filled with symbolic gestures. Catholics go through a ritual of eating the body of Christ and drinking his blood during their ritual Sunday mass. And some of you thought the ancient Druids were a wee bit too bloodthirsty. Symbolism and ritual are the cornerstone of religions everywhere.

I don't imagine this church ministry and it's planned book burning will have much of an effect here in the US, but it certainly will add to the problems Americans face overseas. This Dove church group and it's Terry Jones pastor are a fine example of why Christians need to be carefully watched.

The Dove church is already in the forefront of the news here in Florida by attacking the gay population for being, in their own words off their website: What is homosexuality? Detestable, indecent, wicked, offensive, perverted, shameful, unnatural, degrading, impure, futile, foolish, godless, dishonorable, a lie.

The victim of this stupid burning protest, in this case the Quran, is only the beginning. Next it will be witches, or maybe homosexuals. Some people have to destroy to further the cause of hatred, and in doing so fulfill their desires or their religious fervor. They would martyr a book to make their point and probably cause further bloodshed in the Middle East. Now there is a good Christian value.

If they are looking for a confrontation with Islam then I will make it easier. The Dove World Outreach Center is at 5805 NW 37th St.Gainesville, FL 32653. Maybe a nice door to door Quran salesman will show up there and greet them with a bang, we could only hope. It would only be fair considering the Bible says an eye for an eye or some such nonsense. I suggest they hold the book burning indoors, it's been a rainy summer season here in Florida. Churches are vast open spaces, good for a large bonfire, maybe the fire department will be on holiday then.

After what happened in Germany in the 1930's the public and demonstrative burning of books - any books - should send a shudder into the heart of any decent person. In a civilised society the burning of books as a politico-cultural demonstration should be prohibited. (Sometimes I think that Americans take the freedoms granted by the USA constitution to lengths and interpretations that the founding fathers never imagined and would never have condoned.)

... would be an understatement.

For 24-hours I've been mulling over just what I might have contribute to any discussion on this travesty; unfortunately I'm still dumbfounded.

I will add, however, that American Religious (both the right and the left of centre) Wing-nuts have had, and continue to have, a long (and albeit questionable) history of this sort of behaviour; whether this be in the cause of purging polite society from the ravages of pornography, deviant (in their cloistered minds) sexuality and prostitution; this in addition to their repeated (and recently renewed) attempts to sway public opinion in acceptance of their narrow views on worthy music, art and literature; all apparently contrary to what is commonly perceived as being a part of the overall human condition; this not-with-standing, frequent (and note-worthy) falls-from-grace within their own ranks, something (I'm afeared) that by (and in) the very nature of the human condition they rail so vehemently against is not going to change anytime soon.

This thread reminds me of the prophetic words by the great Jewish/German poet Heinrich Heine (1821):
"Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen."
"Where books are burnt, in the end people are also burnt."

Thank you, Tor, for this quote. It's heart-wrenching how prophetic it is - quite literally.

Having been in the Opernplatz in Berlin on 10 May, having seen the monument and the names of the "degenerate" authors written in chalk across the square, helps remembering the nazi book burning campaign in 1933, and what was to come later. Needless to say, you and Timmy have other and far stronger images imprinted in your memories and souls.

Fundamentalists of all shades and colours deliberately shut their eyes and minds to basic concepts of human values, but what frightens me the most, is how leaders of well-educated and so-called civilised societies seem to be able to obfuscate the distinction between truth and untruth, between democracy and fascism.

Heinrich Heine was himself a Jew and a century later his works would have been burnt in his own country.

Not as sinister but on the 24th of August, the city of Santa Clarita will decide whether to privatize their three libraries which are currently runned by the County of Los Angeles. The biggest concern from the community is censorship. We have a self proclaimed "Proud Racist" on the city council and it is almost unnerving that he could be in charge of what books, videos, etc, the library could carry and what needs to be pulled from the shelves. The future doesn't look promising for the local libraries.

... but, I think I would be inclined to want to know why they would consider privatizing "Public Libraries" in the first place? Once done, they can hardly be called "Public" at all, and become subject to policies that are no longer in the control of the public, nor likely in the public interest.

"The City of Santa Clarita City Council will return from its six-week recess on Tuesday and make its final decision on whether or not to seize control of its libraries from the County Library system."

The decision was made to secede from the County of Los Angeles and go ahead with the annexing the libraries and give control to a for profit company called Library and Logistic Systems Inc. The council voted 4 to 1, and most likely this decision was made weeks ago. The most interesting and difficult aspect of all of this rigamaroll is that one council member actually changed his mind and stating that the public testamony did the trick, and the council member was the Proud Racist Kellar.
And it definitely is privitizing. As of July 1, 2011, there will be no free library services at all. This is a definite clearinghouse to turn the library system in Santa Clarita into a marketplace endevor, governed by economic factors, and not a marketplace of ideas. If this is the case, I'd prefer to go to a Borders Bookstore, drink a cup of coffee and browse through a book from home. Or visit City of LA Public Library.

For every action there is a reaction. It seems all it takes is for one small minded group of people to preach hatred and the other side reacts.

It isn't like the Islamic groups need an excuse to inflame the public, but someone passed this Christian message of hate along with just that in mind. Maybe they sit and watch CNN, who knows? This will come to no good:

Now they have done it, the Dove Church (ironic name isn't it?) has pissed off the US military. Maybe we can expect an airstrike next:

It has to be something to do with the old insularity the USA exhibited for so long. Unfortunately insularity is incompatible with a self appointed role as the world's policeman.

It's hard to understand how the Dove Fool thinks he is adding to world peace (I sound like a Miss World contestant now) by his actions, but then Europe used to spend a lot of time fighting Muslims in the Middle East in centuries past.

SInce Christianity and Islam seem to be two seeds from the same plant it seems amazing how hostile they are to each other. And, since they share the same bogeyman, how come he lets this happen?

I think it's a pretty good response to this dove outreach guy.
