Really getting into it

I am not a big fan of the Christian God in America, a pantheon of Hindu dieties would serve me better, they would be easier to understand. I am hoping you gentlemen across the water have some other diety working on your behalf, the one here is broken.

Threads for the last day or so in this forum have been harsh and I am just as guilty of bad behavior. My personal feelings about the religious nature of others has been on the table and called into question.

I cannot speak to what I see across the pond, but it seems many of the same issues that rile us here exist there. Hate crimes, bullying, even gay boys committing suicide. It only speaks to the sameness of our shared misery.

America on the other hand is gone mad, cookoo, looney. Brody understands what I mean, the lunatics are in charge of the assylum. To see vids of the flag waving mindless hoarde is disconcerting and frightful, where are we headed? Wrapping themselves in flags and claiming that we need God back in our country just shows how truely childish these people are.

(Just as an aside. I am sure there are people here who feel that Jesus will appear again, the much vaunted Second Coming, and that when he does arrive that this time he will be an American.)

But they are adults, they have a vote in elections, although I'm not sure they understand what they are voting for, and that's the crux of the matter. To see someone like Glenn Beck raised to the level of a minor diety is frightening. But his audience is vast, they all watch Fox News and believe what they are told. If you wonder where the fear comes from then think of Germany around 1939, all Beck needs is a mustache.

Images of jackbooted thugs in Berlin, massive parades in Red Square...you begin to see my point. When a population so mindlessly follows along with the thoughts and ideas of some cultural icon like Beck we should be worried.

A decade ago the Christian Right (sieg heil anyone?) began to seep into our government with a vengence. They began two wars, went after gay marriage to distract the masses from the real problems, and ran our economy into the ditch. To see the aftermath of that disaster watch Brody's posted video of the Whitestock rally.

I agree with Warren, these people look less than educated...but wait for it...they have diplomas. Religious schools teach a standard curriculum of Science (creationism) History (from the Christian POV) and English (open your literature books to John, Chapter III, Verse...) Frightening.

What is frightening is that we accept these "educated" children into our colleges. How do they pass a biology exam? "Jesus did it, Professor, animals don't evolve." And so the dumbing down of America has begun, that ought to make the Taliban smile, they use the same tactics in their schools.

I tend to look across the pond with hope. You see, my forefathers came from there, Wales I believe. Of course you have stupid and silly people as well, but you also seem to have a communal discourse on a higher plain of thought (especially after a pint or two).

America lacks communication, real talk. I know that sounds silly in the face of internet, twitter, facebook statistics. But we don't share a great deal of intelligent conversation. My 20 year old nephew is a perfect example of smarts without intelligence. I feel the hand of doom creeping around our collective throats.

I feel it is perfectly fine to rant and rave here, just don't make it personal, we don't know each other that well. For all we know Anthony is a seven foot lesbian and he stole that photo from a spandex shorts advertisement. JFR is probably the head of some secret intelligence service who sends assassins around the world (if only that were true...I have a short list for him...nevermind). In my world Timmy would be your PM and the UK would become the most compassionate country in the EU...OK?

We all have a lot to say, we feel it must be said and shared. Lets talk in a whisper and let the fanatics shout. It will make them easier targets for JFR's employees.
Peace and a few hugs.

Lovely ChrisJames! And nearly right. This lesbian is eight feet tall and the lycra tights (not shorts) come from Florida!
And I've just come home smarting from an ignominious defeat in a game of one-ball (it's a variety of croquet). During the war in the UK one of the most persistent rumours about Hitler was that he only had one ball.
John Stuart Mill was an advocate of democracy but he pointed out that the majority is far from always right and their tyranny if proper bounds are not set is particularly severe. Who can be a check or balance against a majority in a democracy?
To avoid a tyranny of the majority we need bounds to what can be settled by popular vote. I think that one of the great weaknesses of the religious right in the USA is that they don't understand that.
When our daughters were little and showed signs of racism we pointed out to them that white people were a minority and perhaps they ought to try to ensure minorities don't get oppressed.
We are all members of a great many minorities!
Love,
Anthony
