Having challenged scientists to explain why he is gay, actor and TV presenter John Barrowman nervously awaits the results of a brain scan which reveal whether he is sexually attracted to men or women. Interesting clip from the BBC science series Making of Me:

I am not sure what Mr. Barrowman expected this clinical test to show him. Areas of brain activity can be calculated, as they show us in this video, and I am sure specific areas relate to sexual arousal. There can be no way to judge when a specific brain pattern developed.
We can be thankful for that otherwise the anti-gay movement would be enjoying the results by saying kids are brainwashed into being gay. No, that isn't true at all I think any gay man would agree. But gay feelings do begin early, long before the testosterone kicks in, even before puberty raises it's head.
I know we are addicted to developing technology and its use in medicine. But the human body provides it's own method of calculating arousal, a very specific and obvious way in men. If all they did was show Mr. Barrowman pictures to incite his feelings and determine if he was gay, wouldn't the erection of his penis be a sufficient indicator?

I suspect it is more complex than erection. Am erection can be triggered by very weird things, including simple embarrassment at being naked in company. Arousal and erections are dissimilar. I was often sexually interested in showers in school, but I was, like so many gay kids, able to suppress erections.
