When I was young, I'd say during the 1960's, no adolescent boy would readily admit to masturbation. A lie very much like how every boy had done it with a girl once, a fantasy to deny virginity and inexperience.
I remember sitting around a campfire in Boy Scouts with a small group of 13-14 year olds (I was one myself) when the masturbation question came up, all denied it except me. I was perfectly happy in the 1960s to admit I masturbated. We learnt about it in school by discussing it. Peer group is fine, but parents are not things to include in that discussion!
