From time to time I bring short pieces about "real life" in Israel (as a contrast to the violence, pillage and mayhem that the media nightly offer for your edification).
The army has a magazine of its own ("In Camp"). A couple of weeks ago "In Camp" carried a very full account of the coming out of the closet of a senior officer, Colonel (res) Elli Sharon - an account which contained a reasonable description of what it's like to be a gay soldier in the Israel Defence Forces. (No real problems at all from officialdom, no need to tell, no need to keep secret.) A few days later the officer in charge of the magazine (which is more than 40 years old), Brig. Gen. Elazar Stern abruptly closed the magazine. The whole country assumed that the reason for the closure was the article about Elli Sharon - who got very positive media exposure as a result - free, gratis and for nothing.
However, it now transpires that the reason for the closure was something entirely different, and now that the real problem has been solved the closure has been rescinded. Today's newspapers report that the two officers have "made up" by telephone, and during the conversation Stern is reported to have said that he has a great regard for the contribution of gays to the army, and only last week a gay woman officer was advanced to the rank of general, and at his (Stern's) personal invitation the officer's life partner attended the ceremony. (Brig. Gen. Elazar Stern is religious.)
