When something works well you never notice it, right?

There is someone who is very special to me that you never see here. He works very quietly away at something he enjoys.

He only comes here to the board when I force him to read a post. I mean force. He doesn't "do messageboards".

So writing anything TO him here is pointless.

Today he reminded me that "back office" stuff never gets recognition, nor praise. It just either works or it doesn't.

Let me list the back office stuff:
  • The changelog
  • the fact that counters only display first time through so we have a true visitor count
  • the site stats (which I see and you do not because they are hidden)
  • the messageboard
  • Haiku Alley
  • Haiku of the Moment
  • the protection around "The Story of Tim"
  • The Site Search Engine
  • ANY form
  • the mailing list
  • The title suggestioins when they were there for Chris and Nigel
  • When I had a party, the party invite scheme
  • Ideas unlimited. He has a new one for gay news items
  • More. I must have missed LOADS
Sometimes I also fail to thank him.

That sucks.

This site would not exist in its current form without him. He is essential and is the unsung hero behind all of it. Sure it woudlbe an html based kluged site like it was before, but it would have NONE of the things that are fun, and we woudl all be at the mercy of some other messageboard provider like we were before.

Behind the scenes he has made me make it maintainable. Ensured that backups are taken. Everything a hugely skilled perosn would be expected to do. And he has done it.

So what would be appropriate?

This would be:

mailto:megaman@iomfats.org?subject=I never knew what you did">Email Megaman by clicking here and tell him what YOU get from his work. Email him. He won't read it here.

Then copy and paste what you have written here.

Do you want to know about him?

Well all that is public is that he is very shy, very sweet, enormously kind and generous, very brave indeed. I will add "good looking" too. He'll not believe me, but who cares? Brave as a lion. And I am proud as hell of him. To the few of you who know his bravery do NOT make that subject public here, and do not remind him of it in your emails.

Now write.

It is as much his site as mine.

As someone who knows the enormous contribution that you have made to the success of the Iomfats site and all its components, I find it a real pleasure to take up Tim's suggestion and write to you with very warm words of thanks. To be quite honest, I think that some of your 'inventions' are downright brilliant. Only a few days ago I told Tim that I thought that you should be doing this kind of thing professionally, and I was very pleased when he told me that such is your intention. If I had the money you could do my site for me at any time!

In my own profession I rarely get thanked and appreciated even though I know that people are grateful and do appreciate. But it's nice to hear it once in a while.

So: danke, merci, danku, gratias, gracias, grazie, todah...

Thanks a million: you are the greatest.

I wish to express, if I may, how much I appreciate your hard work behind the scenes on the Iomfats site.

I envy anyone who can even contemplate creating a website, as I haven't the slightest notion where to begin - let alone maintaining one to the highest standard as that I have witnessed.

You must be so very proud of all you have achieved and please know I am proud to be a regular visitor.

These words are, I feel, totally inadequate - but, quite simply - "Thanks".

an "open letter" sent in an e-mail to Megaman:

Dear “Megaman”,

The following is a posting I made to Tim’s message board. It’s a foregone conclusion that you won’t read it there, so I’m passing it along here.

When you go to the movies, have you noticed how that very moment the final credits start to roll has become the cue for the audience to immediately get up and leave? They say the reason for this is that it’s boring to sit there and watch a lot of names go by of people doing oddly-named technical jobs for which the general public has no clue of what those jobs entail. This is something I could never figure out. For one thing, it often allows a chance to hear the film’s best music all by itself; for another (much more important) thing, to watch the credits (especially if you enjoyed the film) is to acknowledge the individual contributions of everybody who had anything to do with the creation of the film. I know if I was ever involved in the making of something like that (no matter how insignificant that involvement may have been) I think I would appreciate receiving any recognition of it. I’m sure I’m not alone in this; but there are those who modestly prefer to work tirelessly but remain behind the scenes, and who therefore deserve even greater recognition.

Megaman is one such person. When it comes to “A Place of Safety” and “It’s Only Me from Across the Sea”, he is the “gaffer”, the “key grip”, the “clapper loader”, the “focus puller” and (especially!) the “best boy” (all uncredited) of those productions. Tim may be the creative force behind these productions, but it would all go for naught without Megaman’s technical wizardry which makes those sites places we look forward to visiting again and again.

So the next time (and every time!) you visit “IOMfAtS” or this message board, watch the credits (as it were) by thinking of Megaman and the invaluable contribution he cheerfully continues to make to our world.

HUGS, Megaman!

Ron
