By Joe Jervis (New York) July 28 | Joe.My.God-PhoboQuotable - Rabbi Yehuda Levin:

"The latest outrage, the sodomy celebration in Jerusalem, specifically planned to begin in an ultra-religious neighborhood, is nothing less than the spiritual rape of the Holy Land with the active support of the Israeli State, her courts and her police. This is just the next stage of confronting and silencing religious opposition locally and worldwide.

This Perversion Pride Parade would never be countenanced in Mecca, the Vatican, Karbala, or Moscow, where the mayor and Russian Orthodox Patriarch vigorously oppose it. The 'brave' 'progressive' Israeli Government and Supreme Court would never dream of allowing the parade route to include Arab East Jerusalem or the Al Aqsa Mosque. The Moslem community locally and worldwide would never tolerate this. Just ask Arab Knesset member Sheikh Ibrahim Sarsur. Thus we see the Israeli elite treating religious Jews with less respect than their Arab co-citizens." - Rabbi Yehuda Levin, spokesman for the Rabbinical Council of America.

"This Perversion Pride Parade would never be countenanced in Mecca, the Vatican, Karbala, or Moscow...."

I can only assume that Rabbi Levin countenances the persecution of people by religions and the states he mentioned. His choice of cities speaks to this, and far beyond the Gay Pride event he decries.

I wonder how he would feel if a gay Jewish man was discovered in the Moslem world and hanged, not for his religion but for his orientation? Would he be so quick to defend the Arabs or Persians in those countries? Maybe he'd like to visit Iran and kiss a little Ayatollah ass?

But he is in America, a land where the freedom of speech allows him to spout such hatred towards his fellow human beings. Let him give that a try in Tehran. Doesn't matter if you are called Rabbi or Pope, there is still a great deal of ignorance in this world.

He follows in the tracks of other men and women of great courage at Jerusalem Open House. When I went to Jerusalem I had the great pleasure of meeting him. LIke all men of courage he is self effacing and also determined. Unlike many he is also drop dead gorgeous.

... sums up rather well, what the LGBT communities Worldwide, in general, hope to achieve within their own individual spheres of influence.

Far too many jurisdictions of competent authority continue to offer few guarantees under their respective Laws regarding equality, safety and simple human dignity; unless, and until, this changes, LGBT behaviours will be continually equated with perversion, and potentially pederasty; and only education (albeit re-enforced to some degree or another by Law) will cure, and redress, the problem.

Even here, in Canada, after 40-years of legal redress under our Law, LGBT issues continue to surface respecting discrimination and safety; this not-with-standing, extensive commitments, and funding, towards equality and inclusiveness education nationwide in the interval.

The biggest hurdle, as I see it, especially here in Canada, and perhaps Worldwide, lies not with "Joe Six-pack" and his brethren, but with religion (with a small-letter "r"), and in particular the fundamentalist factions of all organized Religions.

Polls taken here in Canada, over the past 40-years or more, surveying Mr. and Mrs. "Atypical" Canadian, show widespread acceptance, and tolerance for much of the human condition, excepting when religion enters the equation.

The best example I can give of this phenomenon occurred not quite 10-years ago here in Toronto. A man, then in his middle 50's, was arrested and charged with numerous "gross indecency" crimes against youth which had apparently taken place when he was an employee of Maple Leaf Gardens some 30-years earlier.

The media, driven by threats of Advertising Withholding by one of the continent's largest advertisers (who themselves were then controlled by the American Family Values people, and which company accounted at that time for approximately 2-minutes of each and every 3-minutes of paid commercial time on Television and Radio in Canada) in each and every reporting of this man's arrest continually slammed home the message that these offenses involved a 50-odd year old and and teen-aged youths as victims, the purpose being that of propagating the myth of his being a pederast of the rankest order, vilifying him, before his case could even come to trial, this again not-with-standing that at the time of the offenses he, himself, was still a teenager and not that much older than the age of his accusers; and again not-with-standing that the sexual favours provided by the victims to this man were willingly given in exchange for the tickets to sundry sporting events or concerts that the victims had wanted in the first place, and had not wanted to pay for.

The only accurate reporting of these events were made by our National Broadcasting Service (Radio-Canada/CBC) who were, and are, generally immune to threats of Advertising Withholding because of their operations being funded largely by the public purse; but, unfortunately whose broadcasts are typically not viewed, or heard, by the majority of Canadians.

The government of the day had to step in, forcing the issue with the advertiser in question, and requiring all media to accurately and correctly report the facts as they were, and not as the advertiser's agenda had wanted.

This circumstance occurs time and time again; driven by fundamentalist leanings of a small percentage of those adhering to one religious belief or another. A decade before the aforementioned incident, these same fundamentalists were purchasing large-blocks of air-time on commercial Television here in Canada, often half-a-dozen hours or more at a time (and not just during cheap-time either, but during prime-time), coupled with a dozen or more Channels, all at one and the the same time, and largely blocking out all, or any, alternative content during the relevant time period, to espouse their message and views. The government of that day too had to step in and force the issue, requiring that they remove themselves entirely from all Public Broadcast; stipulating that should they choose to do so, they could purchase their own Network to broadcast their message and views; but they would never again be allowed such behaviour on Public Broadcast; as a consequence the Christian Broadcast Network was born in Canada; but only as a Cable Channel, and only should the viewer wish to subscribe to their services; a situation that continues to prevail to this day.

Government intervention such as I describe above works; but, only to put out brush-fires. What is needed is day-to-day vigilance, and renewed commitments to educational programs and services that address inequalities (respecting everyone, not just LGBT persons) existing within the system.

School Boards across our nation have had to be, in recent years, especially wary of groups, themselves "holding a cross in one hand and the bible in another" shouting down all opposition with cries of heresy and worst; attempting to force upon disparate communities their fervent agenda; this not-with-standing that in most large Urban centres here, nominal Christians (regardless of the flavour) likely account for less than the majority of that particular community. This too, is seen time and time again, usually respecting School Prayer, Sex Education, and Community Values, usually with an extensive anti-Pro Choice and -LGBT bias.

After more than 40-years (and two successive generations) of our "Multicultural" policies, discrimination here in Canada does continue in housing, health-care, the work-place and services; but, generally speaking not through malice and intent, but rather, and largely, through ignorance of the Law; excepting in the eyes of our fundamentalist brethren in whose World "anything goes" just so long as it's their way. Further work, and vigilance, is, and will continue to be, necessary; but, eventually through education, tolerance for most of the human condition will be achieved; but, it's likely going to take a couple more generations to fully realize.

"Pride" events are worthwhile, and albeit rather grudgingly, likely continue to be necessary; but, only as one tool, one device, in an comprehensive educational arsenal and agenda.
