Ok, I know Daisy's Legs in the Dukes of Hazzard are not really our thing, but I rather liked the General Lee.
Yes, I like cars!
No, I've never had an awesome one, I wanted a Citroën Traction Avant when I was a kid, but never got one, and also an Austin Champ, but with the Rolls Royce engine. Their reverse gear was a transfer box, so you could go flat out in backwards! I never got one of those either. Instead I got one of these!
It would hit 96mph on a good day, and that was after I breathed on the engine!.
The fastest car I had was a 4.2 litre Jag XJ6, actually an XJ40 [but who has ever heard of those?], which was really a very high speed sofa with a certain amount of roadholding if you gave advance notice in triplicate of a bend.
But I digress. Starting on Wednesday we have a new author, Geron Kees [he posts here sometimes], with a tale for petrol-heads. Is 'gas-head' a US term, I wonder?
I don't usually trail new stories, and I have no idea if Castrol R is just a UK product, but it is the definitve smell of motor sport for me! Damn, I've digressed again!
Anyway, Wednesday 23rd March unveils something not only to rival Daisy's Legs, but there is no Boss Hogg, and only Geron can tell us if there is a General Lee!
It's called Rules of the Road.

Interesting. I think the XJ6 handles rather better, it certainly gives a rather good ride and if you drive one in accordance with its weight, wafts jolly well. Waftability is the thing one looks for in any prestige car, good passenger comfort while the driver gets from A to B in only slightly less time than a hot hatch might manage.
Although I'm hardly one to talk, my vintage car has frightened horses at over 100 yards (yes I did stop and turn it off) and as originally built, was a menace to motor cycles as the engine oiling system is total loss and spits the dead oil out on the road. I made it a catch tank with a tap to empty it at home and periodically take a can of the dead oil to the council tip.
I know I'll be asked, "what is it", so it's a 1930 Morgan Super Sports Aero.
And yes, I will check out the story.

I love those!
The succession of Jags each handled better than the last. My first as so loose as to be scary. I ran each into the ground, the last one literally. The front frame hit a manhole cover. The right hand side stopped. The left hand side carried on, and the car was written off. I drove the bugger home rather sideways after i found the inertia switch

You may now read Rules of the Road.
From the first chapter there is no clue where it's going, except that there is likely to be a bit of piston crown polishing ahead, and there is a likelihood of new valve seats needing to be reamed.

Certainly chapter one is hugely promising, and contains a strong automotive flavour to a coming of age drama. The interesting bit is the period chosen. Muscle cars were not named that way by accident. Hugely powerful, way in excess of the available grip which was limited by both the tyres and the poor suspension. Put some larger rubber on the rear and you have a drag race car, but show it a corner and it's likely to be embarrassed by some quite basic European cars.
I'm definitely looking out for the next chapters.
