The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

No, not Joe Orton.

A first clue: lyricist and composer.

Yes, it is Lionel Bart. He sold the rights to his most famous work, Oliver!, to fund his excessive drinking. Thus he lost millions because it proved to be such a hit. He died in penury, almost. I think he best lines were

It used to be fun,
Dad and Old Mum,
Paddling down Southend,
But now it ain't done,
Never mind, chum,
Paris is where we'll spend our outings!
