Hi Andy,

I'm the world's worst at clearing things out, so I sympathise!

One thing you could try following is the DEJUNK mnemonic. Go through your stuff and sort everything into six piles:

D umpable No good to you or anyone else. Bin it.

E ssentials Items you need or use regularly. Sift out duplicate items. Then find a permanent home for eveything (if you have empty drawers then great!).

J umble Stuff you don't use any more and are unlikely to use again anytime soon, but might be of value to someone else. For the charity shop or raise some $$$ by selling on eBay.

U ndecided If it takes longer than five seconds to decide which pile to put it in then put it in a box. In a week's time re-examine anything you haven't removed from the box and ask yourself do I really want this?

N ostalgia Stuff you are emotionally attached to or that you might want to keep to look back on in years to come.

K aput Stuff you don't use because it's broken. At the end review anything in this pile and decide which things you're going to get fixed. Anything else gets moved to Dumpable or Jumble.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Things with memories attached go on dressers and in book cases.. I got some stuffed animals, my favorite is my teddy bear. Those I keep on my bed till I go to sleep. (dont want no smart remark bout the teddy bear from you guys). Some stuff I keep on the top shelf of my closet. Under the bed is always a good storage space. Most of my stuff is books, papers, and a lot of computer parts and stuff. My desk is taken up mostly with my dragon collection.

I get some cardboard boxes, (If you don't have a storage room, you can cut them down so they will slide under your bed.) and into these boxes I put the things that I feel I can live without for a few days or so, and store them away. If after 6 months, (you decide the length of time) I haven't gone into the boxes to get something, I know I can give the STUFF the deep six and still live.

Be sure that the box has a cover of some sort so you cannot view the STUFF. The STUFF will plea for mercy and play weird mind games on you even if you view it with the use of a mirror. Turn your head away as you dump it into the trash barrel....don't look back.

... you have deep, deep problems! It can only get worse!

In principle I've always been a neatness freak - you know the sort: a place for everything and everything in its place. By and large, I HAVE sussed out a place for everything, the problem is that I (and my unfortunate family) live surrounded by piles of stuff still waiting to be put in its place. We have two garages and three cars between us. One garage is already full of stuff, and there's so much stuff in the other that only our little Ford Ka can be fitted in - and that only for the time being!

Seriously, though, Nick's mnemonic seems like good advice. Trouble is, I'm a chronic nostalgic, so small envelopes would be big enough for 'Dumpable', 'Jumble' and 'Kaput', whereas 'Nostalgia' would (and does!) need a sizeable garage!

I wish you luck!

There are lots of cures, none of them good. Army basic training will fix ya, 'course the cure is worse than the disease. Living with a college room mate should cure ya, but usually it just means twice the stuff.

My theory is to clean a 'corner' of a room at a time, and everything that comes out of that corner has to be put in it's proper place, whatever that may be. In short order you're on your forth corner and then the first is a mess again - sorta like painting the golden gate bridge.

Good luck
Simon

For me shelves are great because you can see * access everything.. & filing cabinets for are best for papers.

Even then I collect treasures at a faster rate than I can process them,...

Basically we have to build, rent or buy more storage space every year of our lives.. We are so blessed with stuff in the western nations..

If you have lack of storage space then Brian's advice is good. I miss some of the stuff I threw out after reading "Taming the Paper Tiger"

I understand the dilemma U R in.. Been there done that.. If U have a logical mind U will realize what things U just haven't gotten around to using, & then find other appropriate homes for these things.

I dont feel I've helped any..Guess it maybe a personal struggle??

Organization is a must. Things U use & need often should be readily at hand. Other items can be grouped/stored by class. Shelves are greatest usage of wall space known to man.. Put them all the way to the ceiling if need be. Have a purpose for eveything you collect. If you're not able to take care of or use the items you have, think of selling them, converting them to cash.

There's a time for everything and a season for every purpose under the sun.. so if you dont use a thing.. discard it. Put office things in your office area..clothing things together with their mates.. make all look neat but be accessible..

All this is easier said than done..I used to get bogged so hopelessly that my Dad would come in clean my room for me, throwing away what he wanted.. It really takes a disciplined logical mind, such thing that I am often in short supply of..
