By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Mar 23 | The Atlanta Journal-Constitution & the Associated Press are reporting that 18 year old Derrick Martin, a senior at the Bleckley County High School, has received approval to take his same-sex date to the school's April 17th, prom.

Martin had approached school principal Michelle Masters seeking permission in January to bring his date to the dance as Bleckley County High policy requires approval in advance for bringing a prom date from outside the county.

The Journal-Constitution is reporting that Principal Michelle Masters told the paper that there's no school policy covering the subject of same-sex dates. County schools superintendent Charlotte Pipkin also acknowledged that the school board had discussed the matter but did not take a vote.
Both Masters and Pipkin say the prom will go on as scheduled.

A Mississippi High School had canceled its prom when a Lesbian Senior asked to take her date to its Prom dance. The ACLU has sued the school in an effort to get it to reverse that decision.

How very wonderful. Finally some school officials with common sense. If they hope to teach students about tolerance this is the first step. I am happy for Derrick Martin, another youthful hero in the LGBT community.

Good news coming from a small town somewhere deep in south Georgia.

One town I want to visit is Gay, Georgia. I hear they have an annual pride festival.

"But because of the media attention, Martin's parents kicked him out of their home."
