A perfectly astounding account of the word "gay" in historical perspective.
http://www.good.is/post/is-it-ok-to-say-gay/?Gt1=48001
The point of the author seems to be that gay persons are just too sensitive about the usage. It isn't gay people who feel the word is untouchable since we use it often. The word is everywhere these days because of DADT and gay marriage. The tragedy of all the young gay suicides has focused the news on the word.
The question of course is aren't we glad "gay" is in general use? The former descriptive words for homosexuals were disgusting, gay is a rather soft label. Except in the hands of someone like Freddy Phelps, but then his self loathing approach to hate seems to be to equate "Gay" with "God" on the signs he holds up. At least we are in good company.
To be fair, we have coined new words and phrases in retaliation to people like Freddy. Christofascists, Jesusfreaks, etc. Let's continue to focus the hatred thrown at gay people back on to Freddy and his ilk. I can't wait for the day when some youngster turns to another and says. "Oh God, that's so Freddy." ;-D
Age appears to be best in four things; old wood best to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read. (Sir Francis Bacon 1561-1626)
