I am bored, now, with two news issues.

Kevin Spacey: Ok, he's gay. Fine. I no longer care about gay celebs, they are people, too. It does annoy me that he attempted to coerce a 14 year old, but that's simple sexual assault. Actually I care when the gay celeb is a decent role model, like Tim Cook.

Danica Roem: She's Trans. Why is that even important in the news? Wasn't she elected on her merits as a politician? WHy does her biology fill my news feed?

This is all News Pornography

Regarding Danica, it's not that the person is trans that's news so much as, the fact that she was able to knock off one of the howling at the moon right-wing loons the US seems so love with. And then being trans makes that even more of a feat since one might have thought that would have made it all the more difficult. I'm not sure what a UK equivalent might be to the guy booted out the door (Ian Paisley?) but it's not the pro/con of her qualifications for the job, as the simple fact of who she managed to defeat.

Mind you, it is a case of one down, and about a million to go. Still it's one step.

On her merits? Have you noticed who is occupying the position of President of the United States at the moment?
On what could you possibly base the conclusion that anyone here is elected on his or her merits as a politician?

There is a certain amount of well-deserved glee being expressed over the fact that a trans woman managed to knock off the author of her state's anti-trans bathroom bill.

Actually, I think Danica Roem has stayed in the news because it was looking for a while like she might overcome the dual handicaps of being trans (and in the American political scene that was, until very recently, an overwhelming handicap) and being entirely qualified for the position (see President of the United States), as indeed she has done.

As should we all, to the extent that circumstances permit.

Sadly, the party he represents seems to be going out of its way to make SCROTUS*  seem like an ordinary politician.

In the latest example that I'm aware of, Republican reaction to revelations that former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore (twice removed from the bench for violations of the U.S. Constitution), the Republican candidate to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions as one of Alabama's two members of the U.S. Senate, engaged in sexual misconduct with teenage girls ranges from mild censure to enthusiastic support. The national Republican Senate committee has announced that it will no longer do fundraising for him, and a number of national Republican figures have called on him to withdraw from the race; many, it would seem, are concerned that Moore will cost the Republicans a Senate seat if he remains in the race. Meanwhile the Republican faithful in Alabama are finding some truly amazing ways of excusing (to the extent that they think it needs to be excused) his actions. One Alabama representative pointed out that none of the women who have accused Moore are minors *now*, so what's the problem?
