Yes, I know these are very old movies and were probably discussed to death in the Forum many years ago!
Recently, in a fit of nostalgia, I dug them out and watched them again.
I thought I'd share my thoughts with you.
It's years and years since I last saw Get Real - there were parts of that were better than I remembered and parts not as good as I remembered. However, I was glad to be reminded of one of my favourite bits.
The cute 16 year old says to his friend (a girl):
"Since I was eleven. That's when I discovered masturnbation. Mind you, it was another three years before I realised I could do it on my own."
A couple of weeks ago, I watched Beatiful Thing for the first time in years. I mostly enjoyed it, though it felt very dated.
Sadly, the crappy 'fantasy dancing' ending was just as bad as I remembered, and it basically ruined the movie for me.

Beautiful Thing should never have been made into a movie. It's much better as the original stage play, ideally in a small theatre. I've seen both versions, and the live play had the credibility the movie lacked.
If you can find (The) Edge of Seventeen, the one set in and around the theme park in Sandusky, Ohio, I'd love to know what you think. I saw it, actually in Sandusky, in January 2001, Visiting Marc and Kevin, contributors to this forum back then. They worked. in the theme park, and had a tape of it.

I've just ordered the DVD of Edge of Seventeen
(and yes, I made sure it was the right movie, not the other called The Edge of Seventeen!)
It will (allegedly!) arrive next week, and I'll write a 'report' soon after that.
When I worked for a while in Cleveland, I went to Sandusky a few times, but only to go to Cedar Point with friends.
Bearing in mind I hate roller-coasters and suchlike, that just shows how foolish I was in my younger days.

Edge of Seventeen:
(My own personal view)
It was interesting from a historical perspective, but I can't say I enjoyed it.
The main character (Eric) was cute but (IMHO) a horrible person.
Yes, some of his actions could be attributed to naivety, but many were just selfish and inconsiderate.
e.g.
Spending what must have been a huge amount of money on clothes and going out to clubs while his mom had to go out to work to pay for him to go to college.
e.g.
The way he badly used 'best friend' Maggie (even though she was a bit creepy).
Yes, it was a different time when being gay was harder, but I don't think that's an excuse for Eric's behaviour..
The gay club scenes appeared quite cliched, with the standard gay characters. Having spent lots of time in gay clubs in the UK and in the USA, to me the scenes in the movie seemed artificial
(in my 'peak' I spent up to 5 nights per week in gay pubs, bars & clubs!)
Anyway, if anyone wants more enjoyable gay teen (highschool) entertainment, I suggest:
Love Simon (movie)
or
Love Victor (TV series)

I suspect it had to be clichéed for it to get any form of release. Cedar Point hated it.

You guys are bringing back memories. I lived in Ohio in the Cleveland area back in the 50s. The family would go to Cedar Point occasionally--but to swim. There was a great beach there, and the lake around Cleveland was pretty poluted. The amusement park that's there now was just a small carnival-like place with booths and such. No rides, nothing like today. But the broad sandy beach was great.
