David Hockney, a well-known British artist, died recently. I learned of this when I read an obituary in the June 19 issue of the The Economist. I had heard of him but wasn't familiar with his work. I looked up the name of the piece that the magazine described initially, Portrait of an Artist (Pool With Two Figures), and something undefinable about it strongly appealed to me. The fact he was gay is almost beside the point, the painting has universal appeal, at least in my eyes, and for anyone who's interested, it would be well worth having a look. I'd be interested in reading any comments about the painting or the artist. Wikipedia also has a long, detailed bio that's worth reading.
