I got a note from an author friend in Florida earlier today. Thanks god she is ok...she lives in a little town just north of Orlando. Her town was on the west side of the eye, which if one must be in a hurricane is apparently the place to be. She reported, however, that Orlando itself was hit rather hard, and that the cleanup is going to be very expensive, perhaps even more so than the aftermath of Andrew a few years ago, even though Charles was less powerful at the time of landfall. The difference is that Andrew swept thru a rather unpopulated area, while Charles came ashore right near one of the most heavily populated corridors in the state.
I'm so glad i live in the NW where we only have to ride out earthquakes and the occasional volcano.
