When Gilbert Baker made the first Rainbow Flag in San FRancisco in 1978, he dyed and sewed it by hand. He picked 8 colors, and gave them each a meaning:

pink for sexuality
red for life
orange for healing
yellow for the sun
green for nature
blue for art
indigo for harmony
violet for spirit

When he tried to get his flag mass produced, the flag makers told him that pink was not available, so the pink was removed.

Harvey Milk, San Francisco's first openly gay supervisor, was assassinated in November, 1978. When the first Pride Parade was being planned to honor Milk's memory, they also hoped that hate crimes like that would never be repeated. The planning committee asked Baker if they could use his flag. They wanted to use 3 colors on each side of the street, so indigo was taken off the flag.

Today, 26 years later, the 6 striped Rainbow Flag is recognized by the International Congress of Flag Makers and represents the strength of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

**Sadly, a beautiful flag will not stop hate crimes, but the hope is still very much alive.

Just thought you might like to know ~
